DONALD TRUMP has always said he is a self-made billionaire. The president insists that the only financial help he got from his father Fred, a New York City developer, was a $1m loan, which he repaid. An investigation by the New York Times (NYT), published this week, concludes that he actually received fifty times that amount, that it was not repaid, and that many of the transfers were dodgy.

The newspaper examined more than 100,000 pages of documents, including financial-disclosure reports and bank statements (but not the president's tax returns, which he refuses to make public). In the 1990s, it says, Mr Trump took part in "dubious" tax schemes which included instances of "outright fraud". It concludes that he "appropriated his father's entire empire as his own".

From this reliable source:
https://www.economist.com/united-states/2018/10/06/donald-trumps-inheritance

Having a look at the various sources before posting, including nyt, cnbc, and some others, there was some discrepancy in the exact amounts being thrown around which then provides only a rough estimate to work with, which can't be cited. It could be just bad data from a few sites and that there are exact figures available but when we begin with having to prove that 1 million was incorrect it misses the point entirely and it at least makes me feel a bit ridiculous. When we stop and think we're able to avoid that jedi mind trick and realize it's way more than what everyone has to work with anyways, and the amount of work everyone actually has to do for less.

I think this is an example of the sentiment in this thread indicating that IQ and specific experiences amounting to numbers or social capital and clout, aren't a universal truth to intelligence, aptitude and ability or w/e (I am horrible at math because of a lack of experience or a learning disability but social intelligence and aptitude in linguistics compensates to some extent)

to act like IQ tests are worthless and hardly measure anything (which a lot of people like to claim) is silly.
Nobody's doing that.
What most people take issue with is the "IQ= INT score" peddled by the modern reactionary right.

This is my first post - I was tested as a child for a gifted program. I'm certainly not going to wave my number around at this age, but I will say I've never had to work that hard in high school or college. There's plenty of research indicating that people who are more intelligent tend to be more depressed. I don't know how many of you watch "The Simpsons," but there was an episode where Homer suddenly became intelligent. Everywhere he went he was tortured by the stupidity of others' conversations. By the end of the episode he had Moe the bartender hammer a nail up his nose to create enough brain damage to make him as dumb as he used to be, so he could be happy again. So if you're here due to depression (like me,) then there's a good chance you have an above average IQ.

Life for a 105 IQ man was not easy indeed in Springfield :(

They matter, even the military uses or used them to determine which men would go to the front lines. Basically they would send the less intelligent guys to the front lines. They matter insofar as to determine what your abilities are when it comes to employment and creating stuff, inventions, civilization. The lower the iqs the more likely the people will not be very advanced with regards to these things. I know we are all intrinsically valuable no matter your IQ, but it does matter if you want the modern comforts and technology that we have been able to achieve. Nobody really wants to move to Subsaharan Africa for the most part and it's because the average IQs are like in the 70's. People still believe in superstition, genital mutilation, and not being able to understand why things happen. They just make up their own ideas which can be pretty scary.

I'm wondering about the kid that was adopted from Mozambique in our town. Came here at 11, came from absolute poverty and a destitute area in his home country. Funny thing though, a little comfort, support, and people caring about him, he graduated in the top 10 of his class at a private high school. Now he is a honors student at the University of Notre Dame hoping to go into biomedical engineering and do research.

Nobody said everyone from the third world is not capable of anything. You have to look at the average from a particular group but there's exceptions. Plus they have lowered college/university standards so more lower IQ people could be admitted. Which is not great because u are then choosing people who aren't the most qualified but who the political class favors since they are pushing for replacement of high iq populations.

Hey wait a minute! Maybe he's spy! LOL. Seriously, we can take a kid with two Mensa parents and put him in a survivalistic / primitive situation and he will adapt to that situation. Take a kid who was raised primitively, and put him a caring and nurturing environment, bang! We have Pygmalion.

The Mensa kid would immediately starve or die of exposure and the other would have access to resources not previously available and if in a top-enough percentage and with enough luck succeed at least long enough for some shill to engage in an uninspired tokenism.

I don't think IQ tests are worthless. I also don't dispute their predictive value in the areas mentioned of education level, occupation level, income level, and job performance. My issue with them is the numbers they generate don't exist in a vacuum. They have societal consequences and those consequences have ramifications on various demographics that result in unwholesome outcomes both in the past and present. Especially now amongst people with learning difficulties, who through these tests then get pushed into 'special classes' they are far too intelligent for. Wind up bored out their skull and essentially give up, becoming the very thing they have been assigned as. Even if that pigeonholing has been arrived at erroneously due to them simply being deficient in certain areas. That is one of my main gripes. Plenty of geniuses have existed that demonstrates this issue, failures academically but revolutionaries nonetheless.

There are also dangers in these numbers and the value that may well be placed on them. So much so they had to be legislated against in the realm of employment in some countries. Ironically, the thing they are good at measuring success for. We don't need more discriminatory tools. It's bad enough being too old for a job, to overqualified for a job, without being told your IQ number means you can't be employed by us or we have to let you go. If people want to use IQ scores as a dick waving contests to get into Mensa fine, I don't care about that. But I do care about people being thrown on scrap heaps because of arbitrary tests that don't take into account the wide range and sorts of intelligence. IQ tests also do not take into account the barriers to education. I really detest labelling culture in general. I think we would be better served if IQ tests were renamed puzzle tests.
