My SN just arrived but the fucking custom opened with knife and taped it back... Will It be ok? I'm so furious right now...
test it, to ensure it is not inert, aquarium test will do imo
Iv had mine (in solid form) for just about or just over 5 years sat in the cupboard in the bag it came in in an airtight box. It's now in its bag in a vacuum sealed bag in a mason jar with silica gel packets. However I had some in just a zip seal bag on its own that had been in the box too, just tested a gram in 100ml and my test shows pretty much exactly the same as yours.
Think the mix needs to be diluted with the aquarium test procedure to not saturate nitrite and nitrate

Should be okay but I'd transfer it to another container. You'll want to test it regardless.

Hi, this is my first post but it's been months I'm reading to this forum. My question is : I've bought SN some months ago from Poland (500g in a plastic bottle). But I've opened it to put 2 x 25g in little plastic bags to make it discreet. Then I've read that contact with air can be problematic. So I've ordered another bottle, but yesterday I've got an e-mail from the company saying they cannot send it to me because of legal reasons... It just made me more afraid... I've opened the bottle around 15 days ago during 15-30 mn i guess (don't remember exact time). Do you think it is still good to ctb ? What about the aquarium test ? Can you please tell me which test must i buy ? Thanks a lot for your answers because I'm in very high troubles (physically and mentally severe illnesses) and sorry for my bad english

I'd like to preface this to hopefully help people not make rash decisions due to the fear that their suicide method will go "bad" and they feel forced to take it before they truly want to. Freedom of choice means everything.

There is a lot of misconception on here about how long both of these chemicals last before they are no longer useable. both SN and N are highly stable compounds in general when stored in a cool, dry, dark environment and unopened the change in potency will diminish very slowly over time. Even when stored in "unstable" conditions, they both will last for a very long time and the loss of potency is negligible. Almost all chemicals are good past their expiration date, an expiration date is not what you may think, " Since a law was passed in 1979, drug manufacturers are required to stamp an expiration date on their products. This is the date at which the manufacturer can still guarantee the full potency and safety of the drug." [1] most drugs will last for decades past expiration, some even for centuries. In the US expired drugs are sold to the military at a discounted price since legally they are no longer acceptable to be sold to the general public.

Stability of Sodium Nitrite

First we will look at SN since it is far more commonly used. "Curing salt has no hard expiration date. If your curing salt is only salt and sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite, it's good forever. Salt itself never goes bad, though yellowing and other discoloration is common. Moisture is a potential problem as it attracts microbes. To prevent such threats, store curing salts in dry, moisture-lock, airtight containers and in a cool dry place, such as your pantry or a dry goods storage closet. Do not refrigerate or freeze curing salt." [2]

Some people are worried that clumping lowers it's efficacy, this is not the case. Here is a picture of pure sodium nitrite [3] and as you can see there is clumping. Small compounds will slowly stick together over time, it is natural and usually has nothing to do with it's efficacy.

Another article showing that is it highly stable

This is a picture of an aquarium test strip that was used on SN that has been sitting in a bottle of tap water with a cap on for almost a year. previously it was believed you needed to use distilled water to insure sodium nitrite would breakdown into sodium nitrate at a much slower rate. considering this SN is still useable in very subpar conditions shows this is not the case as well as shows how stable it is as a compound.

View attachment 128405

This shows Sodium Nitrite is much more stable than previously thought, even in unpleasant environments.

Stability of Nembutal (pentobarbital)

Onto Nembutal, although it isn't talked about much anymore I still think it would be a good idea to show some information regarding it. In the past there was a lot of fear that it would go bad past the due date, as well as once it was opened you had to drink it in a certain amount of time. I would like to showcase why this is wrong.

I believe these two articles are the most notable and shows N in both it's stable and unstable environment and how it reacts.

Article 1: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26234474/

The biggest takeaway from this is, "We determined that the drug degraded at a maximum of 0.5% per year in our preparation (alkaline water/propylene glycol/ethanol) when stored in the dark at room temperature. "

Article 2: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23982045/

The biggest takeaway from this is, "the pentobarbital sodium in injection appears to be very stable, because the loss in potency was only about 6.2% after it was boiled in water for 1.5 hours."

This isn't really related but I thought I'd share this as well. There is an anecdotal report on Erowid about a person who took N recreationally for an extended period of time. The biggest thing to note is they found expired vet N had a worse taste. "some of the bottles were past a use-by date they seemed to be the most foul to drink and provided an inferior experience". An inferior experience in this context refers to the high and possibly that the potency of N was only slightly diminished.

As you can see N is also a highly stable compound and will last long past it's shelf life with very little loss in potency. When the liquid turns cloudy it means nothing in terms of efficacy loss and is just an arbitrary rule in determining it is no longer good for sterile use in a medical setting.

I hope this thread has helped to clear up the air that Sodium Nitrite and Nembutal do not go bad quickly. You do not have to make a rushed decision to ctb because of the fear that either compound will not work. both substances are highly lethal decades past expiration. Exercise caution and make sure ctb is the right choice for you.

What is the difference between curing salt and SN? It seems the former is easier to find than the latter but is one better?

Is there an amount of nitrate that will do the same job? I know nitrate converts to nitrite but how much would it take?

I personally do not know about it, but if you do a search for "aquarium test" it will produce many results.

I have sn from two sources but one of them seems to be more pure. Both sn but one of them is in a better container. I don't think it would make much difference when the dosages people take are way over the minimum lethal amount.

I've opened my bottle for around 30 minutes. I hope it's still good as it was in contact with air. I did the aquarium test with strips but i don't know if I did it properly

Well I suppose youre talking about pure 100% SN vs a curing salt which is 6% SN 94% other stuff. Curing salt is widely available to anyone since it's used in cooking.

edit: wrong math

I've just started reading this thread, but I don't get much time here at all. Apologies.
I am desperate to know though (beyond desperate, this is make or break for me & my bus) - how long is SN still effective after mixed with water???
If I put the solution in small jars, tight lids, covered from air & light???
An hour? 2 hours? 4? 8?
I know it's not optimal, but if life was optimal, I wouldn't be on a suicide forum. Right?
None of us would...
So, please put aside optimal, for an answer.
I'm really begging here guys.
I know that's pathetic & repulsive, but I really need help, & that's what this community is for.
I have seen 2 anecdotal answers so far, but nothing definitive. I have little time here & a brain injury, if I could do myself, I would.
I asked Exit & they said if I post that exact question on the exit & pph forums, they get answered by an expert, including Nitschke himself. I'm not 50, I don't know any members or can't recall anyway... Any Exit members out there??? Could you post on their forum & ask??
Just ballpark how long SN is still effective once mixed with water?? Maybe whether to make it stronger to counteract the degradation?? Or just roughly how many hours, or if you can tell (without testing).
I don't know.
Any help appreciated. I've done my best to help others while I've been here, gone to great lengths for some people, tried really hard to share the bits I actually know & have experience with.
I'm ashamed I'm still here, still asking for help.
I see this answer as a lifeline (deathline??) on how to finally do this, overcome the hurdles that have stood in my way, to get my bus outta here & this life that I just don't want & can't bear.
Please help.

Most of my anxiety is going to be having to stop and measure it out beforehand. If I could do that on a different day and put it in a ziplock that will make the whole process easier cuz I have severe severe anxiety and I have tremors. So would it be okay to measure it out let's say a week ahead and put it in the ziplock pre-measured before I put it in water and mix it? Mine has been in a vacuum sealed bag for about a year and a half.

I got an answer via an Exit member. On their forum, Nitschke answered & said it "should" be ok dissolved "a day or two" in advance, but to store in closed glass. That was from 2022. I don't know if anything more specific has come out since then, but it's the best I've gotten so far. Best of luck.

I don't think I would dissolve it beforehand but definitely if I can measure it out and put it in a ziplock because for some reason that gives me the most anxiety. It came in a vacuum sealed plastic bag and I have so much anxiety cutting it open and it going everywhere because I don't want to risk anybody else coming in contact with it. I don't know why measuring it gives me so much anxiety but it just does. I'm trying to think how to open the bag without me going everywhere. Maybe I could do it over a bowl so when it spills I should be okay. When I ordered it I wanted to order 50 g's that would make it much simpler but it only came in 100 g which is going to make it more difficult to measure out. I remember people saying I believe that 25g equals around one tablespoon maybe? also I remember something about not stirring it with a metal spoon but I think maybe that's a myth. I remember I used to know all the answers to these questions however with cognitive decline my memory is slipped slip slipped away.

I'm with you on the cognitive decline... I was in a rush, I thought you meant mixed with water, my mistake. I think the metal thing still gets mentioned, I've made sure not to have any, but clearly no expert. When I opened my SN, I did it in a shower without the water on. Be careful with it, it's poison, I remember a member here who got it on their hands & then rubbed their eyes & said it hurt.
Sorry to have misread you. Best of luck.

I was thinking of the exact same thing to do in the shower although I've got some disability so getting down there and getting back up it's going to be difficult. I got my scale to weigh the 25g out and then the cups I have are lightweight soI don't have to worry about the weight on those. I have benzos but they're not the right type they're not fast acting so the timing on those is everything so I'm probably just going to take some before but if I end up vomiting too much and then take benzos even though they're not super fast acting I know I'll pass out and if I throw up and then I'll be out of luck so I need to stay alert for the second cup if need be. I think I heard if you can keep down most of it for 10 minutes you don't need to have a second cup. I don't live by myself so time alone is scarce and far in between. I had some time alone a few weeks back but then end up getting the severe flu so there was no way. I might have some time in the next few weeks. I feel like if I could get somebody to weigh it for me and mix it up and hand it to me that that would be half the battle for me. I'm thinking I should just maybe cut the top open it's vacuum sealed and I know it will spill out. I know you have to be careful if you get it on your hands because it won't be enough to kill you maybe but might knock you out. I would baby suggest wearing some gloves. There's more to think about each time you go over the situation and then I find that there's still things I need to troubleshoot. I didn't have to worry about the throwing up making too much noise then I wouldn't have a problem. Even though I'm older I still live with my mom so I've been telling her that I've been vomiting the last few days because I do have some pain conditions that cause issues like that so that way if she hears me in the middle of the night she might not come I'm just kind of setting it up in case I get desperate and have to do it when she's home. Best of luck ♥️

Best of luck to you. I have diff benzo's & haven't figured that out yet. I would recommend gloves, mostly to keep your eyes safe.
Every time I try to plan things, I overcomplicate it, make it crazy, impossible, too hard, I'll fail.
I don't have alone time, I have a TBI & adhd & physical health issues & I drown in shame about not being able to do something that all my friends here made look easy.
I did one powerful thing though - I don't know if you have any spare - I had some leftover from the first time I bought (& didn't use & hate myself for).
But I made up a batch.
To see what it looked like, how it felt, all of that.
It was powerful.
To look at this little drink, that I'd made in good brain time, was confident it was correct, pictured myself picking it up & drinking it.
All the noise in my head fell away for a bit.
I think I saw it as simply as all the people who get so, so frustrated by me, do.
Then I went straight back to planning, overcomplicating, bad brain time.
So I've finally worked out that for me, instead of fighting my limitations, I need to find strategies that bypass them.
I don't get much time here, & I do still have things to look up, better run.
Best of luck, again.

Yeah I have cognitive issues and probably some similar ADHD issues. The simplest thing's are so complicated in my mind. But the fast that you actually got it mixed and looked at it is a big step. That's a thing of most afraid of is just weighing it and stirring it that is spilling it everywhere. Did you use a metal or plastic spoon? I heard you're not supposed to use metal but maybe it's a myth?

I don't get very much time alone either and the last time I had alone time I ended up getting the severe flu which blew it. I'm thinking about trying to weigh it out in 25 g and two bags so I have that part done.

I have 100 g I wanted to buy two 50g but that wasn't available until the week after I had already purchased it. Which it's been like a year and a half.
I might get some time in a few weeks but it's only a couple hours maximum. If I already have it weighed out that would be one of my biggest issues are time and me being afraid of spilling it. Mine came in a vacuum sealed bag so as soon as I cut it it's going to spill out. Maybe I'll put a plastic bag underneath to catch it I don't know my strategy it's not like I have something to practice with.

And as far as like cooking measuring stuff yeah I haven't done that in a long time. I think 25 g's is like equivalent to maybe I don't know if it's a tablespoon or teaspoon? I wish mine came in a bottle so I can just open it and kind of dip in but being vacuum sealed I know that there's no air that is entered at least so far. Like I said the fact that you already mix them up shows that you've conquered that fear. Or at least lessened it.

I have a lot of physical limitations too and I'm tired and fatigued all the time and my sights not very good anymore. I'm a mess so trying to get everything lined up it seems almost impossible. Because being time I would have alone would be only a short time and I'm not sure how that would ever line up with me having clear thinking at the same time which might only be once every few days for a few hours. I think the problem would be if my mom hears the vomiting.

Normally she doesn't care about it anything about me about my health or so forth but my luck would be that she would hear that one time and my cat would start crying and then she would come in to check. I just wish I lived alone then I would already be gone cuz I could be able to just go whenever I felt like it. I went to her calendar to see the times and she should be gone cuz she has a lot of doctors appointments she's elderly but most of them are close by and when she leaves and comes home she's not even gone an hour and I can't risk that. I literally am going to get one chance because if I fail she'll put me away for whatever years I have left which will be hell!

Maybe you can give me some tips on how you measured it out and mixed it up? Was it in a bottle or a vacuum sealed bag? Like you I planned on doing it maybe in the shower and then renting it down if I spilled any. Why does it have to be so difficult? I wish I didn't have to go alone I wish I had someone here to help me mix it up. Or maybe even someone that could go about the same time as I did. I know there's no chance for me I don't have a future I'm too sick and I live in an abusive situation and I don't think my mom will be around too many more years and then I will be homeless and sick. I don't know how long you're going to be around but you can feel free to message me.

Exercise caution and make sure ctb is the right choice for you.

This was very informative for me. I have prepared my SN in filtered smart water about a month ago for when that moment comes . 25g in 100ml water. I knew it would still be viable months later but this just confirmed it for me. Thank you.

Laminated or not? If there is one metal sodium nitrite reacts with, it is aluminum. To have a more aggressive reaction, moisture/water needs to be present, but from a safety standpoint, it's a strange behavior to use that material.
Makes sense tho.

i am able to buy Sodium nitrate, but is that the same as Sodium nitrite? Will it work the same? Sodium nitrate has the formal
NaNO3 while nitrite is NaNO2

I also plan on buying strips to test it

okay so i am able to buy SN since I found a site, i was just wondering how much? i can buy 1kg for pretty cheap, if i add another 1kg = 2kg then it's also pretty cheap but i have heard that you're supposed to use half a teaspoon of it or something like that..

i'm thinking if 1kg is too low, then maybe 2kg? plus strips to test it once it's here, or also do the blood test..

i need answers fast since i just bought the SN

Nitrate is NOT the same as Nitrite. Also you should only need about 25g from what I have read in PPE.

My SN is 5 years old in its original unopened airtight box. Is it still good you reckon?
