I don't listen to much classical music as of late, but I've been listening to this on repeat for the last week. There's something about late Beethoven pieces. A melancholy far removed from simple sadness. An acceptance that you've reached the final station of transience and that death is nearing. A certain sweetness follows this realization. There's no despair, no fighting the inevitable. This sweet sadness is the final challenge of life, mans' final knowledge and last delight.

In contrast to that, I'm sharing some of Schubert's late work. Schubert was no stranger to romanticist death wish, some of his earlier work dedicated to that. But he suffered from terminal illness (supposed to be syphilis) before he died at the young age of 31. A lot of his greatest works were composed nearing his death, and you can hear a mix of desperation, fatalism and defiance in them.

I love flamenco (and I mean "true" flamenco, not the tourist variety) because it expresses pain and sorrow like few other styles of music that aren't modern styles with a focus on just that. Played flamenco guitar for a while myself. My personal "guitar hero" is Chicuelo, seen here.
