Transmission - Joy Division:



I am a relatively new listener of Joy Division. I came to know of the existence of Joy Division through another band that I like named: Killing Joke; they originate from the same era, and both bands have tracks which contain certain themes that overlap each other. It is difficult to explain or to put it objectively, but they both give off very similar feelings, or "vibes".

How did I find out about Joy Division? I was on a Killing Joke music marathon. There was a particular track (or tracks) that covered mental health-related issues and such. That is when YouTube recommended the soundtrack from a movie named: Control (2007), and one of the songs on it is Dead Souls. At first I knew nothing of it, but while listening to the song (and enjoying it), I discovered that the movie is about a young man called Ian Curtis who was the lead singer of the band... Joy Division! This is were it all started. Not just this but according to some sources Jaz Coleman, the lead singer of Killing Joke, is a fan of Joy Division. This may explain the similarities between the bands - inspiration perhaps?


Also taking the post onto another track (pun intended): Try listening to these 2 songs and listen if you notice anything, and if you do notice it - know that apparently it is just a coincidence.

The similarity between these 2 songs, that you may notice, is how I also accidentally discovered Nirvana too.

This song is about Liz, the sister of the Eels lead singer. It's about a suicide attempt. It was unsuccessful, but she ultimately took her own life eventually.

It's a short, simple song. The lyrics are direct and straight to the point. It hit me hard because firstly, it's about a real person who took her life and an effort to convey it from her perspective. And secondly, there is something powerful about these lines:

I never got through all the pages. I started posting around the beginning and stopped for awhile. I wasn't able to catch up. I did go back through some pages but I gave up. Some of the videos don't work anymore.

That a fantastic song from the italian songwriter Claudio Lolli, the text is about a man who hates living the same day again and again working and during the nights searching for "priced womans". So one day he see a strange light coming out of a window and suddently the yard underneath is gone and there's a green island of happines. So, like everyone would do, he jumps and the yard "collects the bones of a man gone mad". Unfortunately he survive and he ends up in a psychiatric hospital dreaming of that green island.
