  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

The idea that evil people will manipulate you into suicide is absurd. I believe though that this site can be a double edged sword, specially if you are focused on the recovery path.
While it does feel great to meet people that think like one does, if SaSu is the only thing in your life, you'll reinforce more and more certain points of view towards life. Most people here thinks life sucks. The % of mentally ill people here should be much higher than other places. I haven't conducted a study to prove it but I think it wouldn't be necessary. I have MDD and OCD and it's great to find likeminded people, however, I know what I read here is not necessarily the truth of the universe.
My point is, if you want to explore why life might NOT suck, SaSu is probably not an ideal place to be. So you might have reasons to consider what your therapists are saying.

The problem with the logic of a place like this "causing" someone to be suicidal is that you can apply that to almost anything. Hospitals and doctor's offices are primarily for sick people. Odds are you go there you're going to encounter lots of people with something wrong. Definitely don't go to the emergency room if you aren't wanting to be around people with something serious going on that needs immediate attention, right? And when your car is broke... don't take it to a mechanic's shop because virtually every car there has a problem!

And so forth...

I haven't been here long enough to know if this is a "good" place for me to be or not. But if I were that easily susceptible to suggestion, there are a lot more negative influences long before I get to this site and far easier ways for people to try and be the devil on my shoulder. I've seen some nasty folks on the popular social media, so I'd be hard pressed to say how this site could be any worse than I've seen people treated there or in the real world. And as established, many therapists are not good at this and are unable to help their patients.

Still in the hospital( day8)

it slip that I was a member of a website ( didn't manage its name) that openly talks about suicide . All of them warned me to not go on this site anymore

Saying there is "malicious actors " on this site . So far everyone is welcoming and understanding. I'm not stupid to assume that there is no malicious people o this site, but that is true for every site.

They say people are going to manipulate me to do something. Please, I was suicidal going into this site . And I have attempted way before I joined.
They fear free speech 💬

I imagine they must also be concerned about the 'echo-chamber' effect. I haven't exactly heard this from therapists but, I have from family members, who pointed out that I tended to hang around with unhappy people (lame ducks they called them- charming,) and, that it would be better for me to be around positive people. It's weird the way our families don't always like to recognise how unhappy we are! I actually don't usually enjoy being around positive people.

I'm not really sure on that one. Ok, no one will encourage you to suicide here. They certainly have misgudged the site there. It's also likely no one will necessarily discourage it though. Especially if a person is more sure it could be there best option.

I suppose from a therapist's point of view- they want suicide to be forbidden in our minds. It's perhaps the worst possible outcome for them. So- they probably don't like the idea of their clients/ patients going places where it's 'sanctioned'/ permissable.

They'd maybe more likely prefer people to be in places that echo the same stuff they're coming out with. That life can change for the better. That we are capable of enjoying it. That suicide isn't a good option. That it isn't an option we should even be considering.

I suppose for them, it's maybe like an alcoholic going to alchoholics anonymous and, letting it slip they've just joined a wine club. They'd likely be nervous that the temptation to enjoy and mutually appreciate alcohol would be too tempting for someone trying to give it up.

I suppose it depends on the person really. What they actually want to begin with. Is therapy to make living easier, but the person doesn't want to rid themselves of ideation and the option of suicide all together? Is passive suicide enough of a coping tool maybe? Are there any fears of actually acting upon it in that case? I've also known of people who did feel it was necessary to leave the site in order to give 'recovery' their full focus. I think it just depends on the person and what they actually want.

I get the sense therapists vary wildly too. Some seem more open to clients who they even seem to feel may well suicide ultimately whereas others display an almost panicked, allergic reaction to them.

Not saying malicious actors don't exist here(though the mods do a phenomenal job removing them swiftly), but let that sink in that someone would genuinely be a malicious actor on a pro choice suicide discussion forum.

It's like stealing food from a homeless person. The level of evil required is nothing short of astounding.
