I have so many house plants oh man! There's roughly 25 in my house, and I've had some of them since I was born. I used to garden all the time when I was younger, and my mom would give me tasks around the yard to maintain everything. Trimming back rose bushes, weeding, planting, you name it. I started growing and maintaining my own plants around age 5, my favourite ones to grow were tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelons, and zucchini. Nowadays I just stick to indoor plants, though.
It's nice to have something to care for in depth. Trimming them back and aerating their soil, or just doing general maintenance and wiping dust off of their leaves, it's all really therapeutic.

I was into gardening a couple of years ago. I had a number of potted plants. Roses were my favourite, both for the flowers and their fragrance. My garden now has no pots. I'm afraid to go outside to water them because of agoraphobia. It's a low maintenance garden now. I tried to grow some opium poppies for the sap but they didn't work. I really like the peony type so I'm just left with a lavender bush and some plants that I don't know the names of that were already here when I moved in. I know one is called Bird of Paradise.

I want to learn but I have no idea what I'm doing. I go to home Depot and stare blankly at the flowers and plants, get overwhelmed and leave. I bought potting soil.

I'm planning to write a guide for 'gardening for free for the depressed suicidal person' at some point, based on my own experience. I'm not doing it just yet, because ironically the weather in the UK is glorious and I'm outside gardening all the time!
Watch this space though...

That's gorgeous!
Thank you. It's my favorite. I found it half dead at a nursery right after my grandfather passed 10 years ago and the man gave it to me for free because he didn't expect it to live. 10 years later and it's still blooming every year and I've given multiple off shoots to people.

That's so cool. I still have a succulent that we bought for my mum when she was in hospital eight years ago. It's on its third generation and I've carried it from house to house these years and repotted it's offshoots to keep it going.

I used to garden alot when I was younger and I found it to be somewhat healing and therapeutic. I'm finally living at a place where I can garden again and I'm rather excited about it!

Does anyone here enjoy gardening in their free time? What do you like to grow? Do you have any tips or tricks that you've discovered?

Gardening has gotten me out of bed and actually going outside every day. I'm getting sunlight and not just ruminating in my negative thought patterns all day. I'm still struggling with depression and anxiety but I feel like its helping me

Black beans, habaneros, butternut squash, zuchini, tomatoes corn, radishes, sunflowers. Those are musts.

Fish parts, coffee grounds, eggshells, old veggies from the fridge. All for feritlizer, no chemicals. You need bugs, don't kill them all. Protect worms when you can.

I try to turn rows up to a foot down if i can do it, turn in some gravel/pebbles as well, and a sandy mix for watermelons [sugar babies] casava and canteloupe.

But since I fell off my garage roof a number of years ago, i can't dig like that anymore. =(

Gardening is good and healing like baking.

Well I haven't been gardening as much lately. But I've got my new fire pit dug out. We'll place a barrel in the center and line it with gravel.

The idea being that it holds in the heat and is more efficient in colder months.

So I saw a company truck clearing and mulching the treeline earlier. Apparently they have to pay 40$ to dump it so I convinced them to dump it in my yard for free.

I have a huge pile of wood chips/mulch now. I've started fixing the flower beds and pathways with it already.

While I was doing that I ran across this crazy new flower I hadn't seen yet. The flower is easily as big as my hand and must've bloomed almost overnight.

it's a hibiscus. I can't tell if there is enough of the plant to root it to save it.
my son died in a car accident almost 3 years ago. This is his memorial garden and an orchid his ex gf gave me at his memorial ceremony.

Thank you for identifying it for me. I have a friend who's big into horticulture and has been helping but he's out of town.

I'm still just fucking stoked on how much free wood chips and mulch I got! :))

lmao yes free mulch and woodchips is great. wish I had some for my gardens. Look up hibiscus- not sure you'll be able to save it so don't count on it. Just enjoy those flowers while they are there

We've had such a vibrant and mixed set of flowers since spring. Some would come, some would go. But its been very nice witnessing the change.

It's a decent piece of land and we have big plans for it. So we're not trying to save everything. Right now we're letting most of it go while we focus on sections at a time.

Brick! My hero. You get an Underscore Badge for opportunistic scavenging! That's exactly the sort of thing I'd do. Mulch is so useful.
And the flower...er...I think you may have a minor Triffid infestation. :smiling:
Damn that's a fine job. I'm envious you have so much land to play with.

Thanks man! I've been trying to scavenge from anywhere that I can. We made some arborist friends recently and have been getting free fire wood too!

I had to look up Triffid because I've never heard the term but I think you may be right. The damn thing reminds me of the little shop of horrors :))

We have almost 3 acres to play with and a beautiful view of the mountains. This place has helped my mental well being and I'm grateful that I found it!

wow I could use some of that if I had the motivation or energy to work on my gardens. You hit the goldmine there
I definitely did and I've been trying to use it as quick as possible before it starts breaking down. We dug out a huge path earlier today and are planning to mulch it this evening.
