I think the next project will be the outdoor kitchen and seating area for the outdoor projector screen we have. It's late in the year and we can't do too much else until spring.
That's where I find myself too. Rain and cold and planting is a no no. Being trapped inside is really hard for me. I need to be outside, I've learned that. Messing about on the PC doesn't help me. Time for vitamin D supplements and sitting in front of the natural light thing. I bloody hate the dark half of the year. I'm a creature of the light.

WOW an outdoor projector screen that sounds awesome! an outdoor kitchen nice... can you take a pic of it dark out of your fire please? it would be beautiful to see. Enjoy those hotdogs and beer. Years ago hmm probably 12 I had an outdoor firepit. I would roast marsh mellows with my sons they loved it. I would relax by the fire at night and yeah have a few beers after my younger son had gone to bed. You're working so hard getting all this set up.

Yes of course! I did manage to finish the fire pit but work and personal issues have complicated things lately. I'll definitely keep you guys updated as I move along!

I only have two gardening jobs left to do:
To move all the new plants into bigger pots for the winter.
To keep adding leaves and grass clippings to the leaf-litter crate.
LOL people don't half look at me weird when they ask what's inside the bags I hoik back from the woods and I tell them "leaves."

Started making an herb spiral the other day. The orange flags are marking the inner circle. We've filled the outer circle in but the weather turned on us. Hopefully we can catch a nice day soon so we can work on it some more.

I'm a big fan of that idea! I love spirals so much, and I wish I could have a spiral garden. But I don't have a yard and struggle to keep things alive.

I like the idea of gardening and love plants, but I don't have much success. And I hate going outside and doing actual gardening. LoL

I've been thinking about getting some plant lights and shelves for inside my apartment. Does anyone have any recommendations for a budget setup? A big part of my problem is no outdoor space and limited windows. The best room for this has no window at all, sadly.

Right now I have two plants that are miraculously surviving: a venus flytrap and a black calla lily, which I shouldn't have bought, but I've never seen a black one before and it was so pretty.

If you can make it look like that, it'll be gorgeous. Spirals are a really pleasing shape. They occur regularly on prehistoric rock art and it's theorised that they are entoptic phenomena, visual effects whose source is within the eye itself. They can also be observed as recurring patterns in the natural world.
I love that idea and if I can find anyway to implement it in the future myself, I'm going to steal it.

Wasn't the biggest fan of years work until last year when I was broken up with. I call it rage gardening, where I furiously clean up all the weeds and clean up the yard while arguing out loud with myself. Therapeutic but also makes me look crazy

I did rage cleaning at the end of last winter. New house, previous owners must not have cleaned for the last 20 years. Half the job was done with a scalpel. There was swearing.

If you have the proper lights it shouldn't matter if you have a window in that room or not. You can even get a cheap timer to set when the lights shut on or off.

I think your setup will mostly be determined by what you're trying to grow. It shouldn't be too expensive to piece something together though.

It won't just be aesthetically pleasing. But it also serves to control how much water each plant gets. The herbs at the top require less water than the ones at the bottom of the spiral. The idea is that the rain runoff will provide the extra water needed on the lower tier.

You don't need a massive circle to make one. Hopefully you can find a good spot to try it out :smiling:

Damn that's clever. I'm sold. Unfortunately, I have the yard and the bank, which is all in shade and not level. Maybe I can pinch a bit of the back field when no-one is looking.

Thanks! I start to get confused because there are so many types and shapes of plant lights. I bought one that worked really well but has red and blue LEDs, which makes my plants alien pink. I want to enjoy the natural colors, so that doesn't work for me. I'm looking at white ones on Amazon, but each one has some special claim. It's frustrating trying to figure out what is just a gimmick.

I snapped a pic of one of my favorite plants the other day. These are pentas-and mine are doing insanely well. They attract butterfly's and hummingbirds. Of course I have several pink ones and 2 red ones. The red is more attractive for hummingbirds otherwise I'd have only pink ones =)

My mom has a window ac in the window by them- I know it's helping them grow the way they have. I need to figure out how to bleach the algae on the bricks that the window ac has caused.

So a small update here. We've gotten some solar powered outdoor lights for part of the driveway and walkways. We've also got a new projector for the outdoor projector screen.

There's a few friends coming up for the weekend and the weather is supposed to be nice. So hopefully we get to enjoy the new fire pit and outdoor projector.

I hope everyone has a great time. Are you running projector? I'd be evil for giggles and splice in different movies. I'd let it be all romantic for 10-15 than Jaws jumps out scaring everyone back to romance for 30 minutes or so than a really gory killing scene from a horror movie back to romance etc.. it would he hilarious

That would be pretty funny! I honestly think it may come down to a vote on the movies, which is cool with me either way. I'll probably be too preoccupied with other things to focus on the movie anyways.

I have a little Elephant Bush succulent, a mini rose, and a cactus I'm trying to save from root rot. I hope to get more plants whenever I can move to a new place. They seem to be doing ok inside under my little "plant light."

I have a tiny worm bin for composting my scraps, they seem to like my tea leaves.

I have a wormery too, but it's full of comfrey, the worms go in the composter instead, though for some reason they seem to like to live in the lid, as far away from the actual compost as possible:/

Is it an enclosed bin? I heard if they are living near the top/trying to escape, it could be too wet or not enough air.

Mine is a tiny bin made for worms, with a few different levels. I keep mine indoors.

It's enclosed/covered, but not air tight. One of these...
Compost bin plastic

Mine wormery is quite small, but my worms come from Poo Mountain, a 30 ft tall steaming pile of horse crap and hay, perched dangerously on a path on a hill LOL, so they arrive in bags of rotting manure; can't really excavate them for a the wormery, so i use it to make comfrey teas instead.
I might try leaving the bin open. It's open at the base anyway.

Nice! Glad you had fun. The spiral looks great, I might do that in the back field when no-one is looking.

I have acquired an unlimited supply of paving crates, meaning that I can potentially make a 3 tier system for composting in the back field behind my brother's garage.

Two issues with this are:

The land technically belongs to the council, so lets just keep it between us :blarg:
The crates are made of eucalyptus. Nails like to bounce off it and it's even tough to saw. Makes damn good firewood though.

It really wasn't that hard, it's just like playing a big game of Tetris.

How often do the council even check on it? I'd wager not very often. I say go for it, you're adding value to the land so if anything they should pay YOU for doing it! :))
