Every time I've used an hotline, I find that it only makes me want to make me kill myself more. I had not so great experiences where someone left while I was chocking myself and I've been hung up on as-well. Even when it is helpful, I can tell that they're reading off a script.

I was wondering what other people's thoughts were on this platform?

I have some bad experiences with them, they did help me a few times a few years ago though..
I had one operator tell me why my ctb attempt failed, and how I could make it work, which snapped me out of my episode because of how weird that was!
But after some of the changes to it here I would say it isn't very good,.
Probably depends on the operator you get tbh.

i tried calling the suicide hotline recently and they don't really help me at all. the operators weren't rude (surprisingly) but they barley do anything, it honestly just felt like a basic ass "things will get better" conversation.

I definitely agree that is quite strange for an operator and I agree that it really depends on the person

I've had similar experiences, it quite frustrating the lack of support

I hate them. They can't give you any wisdom, they can't tell you anything you don't know. They can't make you feel better. Hell, they can't even stay on the line for more than ten minutes!

They only repeat your words back you. Give you basic advice that even the world's stupidest person could figure out. Then they hang up. And that's it.

Of course if I wanted to talk to myself I wouldn't have called a damn hotline!

Suicidal people deserve better.

no, but i wouldnt expect them to be. They're just volunteers doing what they think is gonna make the world a better place, and then get hit with the face by the reality of other peoples lives and have no option but to just stick to their scripts.

it really is a roulette. i've been lucky and had some alright ones. all of them are monitored by a supervisor, there's quite literally zero privacy. whenever it gets "too far" in the direction of suicide, the supervisor will overrule the person you're speaking to and have you institutionalized. you have to lie about not having plans to hurt yourself, but if you have to lie to continue the conversation, then the conversation isn't really helping anyone.

Some of them are paid, I've know people doing it part time. Paid or not, it's really pointless unless you want the cops to show up. Otherwise, they're trying to be supportive by mirroring what you say and giving scripted responses. Honestly, AI does a better job.

Nope I honestly would rather talk to a brick wall or AI than ever talking to them again.

actually they've helped me in an ironic way. once I was gonna kill myself and they put me on hold and made me listen to justin beiber and I got so mad I forgot I wanted to end it and I went to bed because I got so mad

Never tried to call one because I wouldn't trust it.

No way do I want to deal with a gun wearing power tripper if I'm manic.

i've never tried in the fear of it not helping and making things worse so i was wondering about other peoples experiences as well. just the thought about calling someone, a complete stranger, and being unbearably vulnerable with them makes my skin crawl.

i see people saying that they just repeat things back to you or give the "things will get better" talk and that honestly sounds so awful. i'd rather not deal with that while i'm spiraling.

I text one of the lines a couple of years back. I was just starting to feel calmer when she essentially said 'times up, gotta go, can't hog the line for one person'. (Slightly more politely via her script, but thats my interpretation). Which then shut me down instantly and upset me so much and sent me spiralling, even more so given I then really felt alone and isolated and abandoned with noone else to try contacting.

I dislike them, although I have had friends who have had good experiences, it really does depend on whos on the line, theres some really sweet people~

however my two operators i got my my calls were some of the most jaded emotionless people i've ever talked to, they told me they don't know much about resources nor do they have any way to tell me any which i found really really weird,,, they also took forever to respond sometimes and there was even a hold line to get on the call in the first place

it all just felt so machine-like, cold, and cruel for people in crisis. i mean i of course understand why the people there must be so jaded and the lack of resources dedicated to these hotlines just make it worse but still, it really does feel like the system has failed me yet again, as it always does

I wonder what they cost to operate.
Money that could be spent on assisted suicide.
