  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I can think of a couple of family members who might go through my computer, but I fully intend on wiping my devices before I go. I'll put the stuff that I think my loved ones would like to have on a USB stick, like my music or some nice photos of me, and then get rid of the rest. I feel better when I still have a sense of control over what they ultimately end up seeing, even though the idea of them seeing everything isn't terribly unsettling to me... but I also definitely don't want just some rando going through all of my shit.

i plan on throwing my phone and laptop into a deep body of water somewhere before i ctb so that no one ever knows anything. there's too much i haven't told my family out of not wanting them to know.

because of this i'll probably get a burner device to put my letters on... if i bother writing any (too much work lmao)

They can try, but they will find nothing besides memes and mod tools.

Definitely. If you value privacy, are withdrawn from your family, or choose not to share such sensitive information; they will go looking.
Before I CTB, I will destroy any writings in addition to my phone and computer.
Of course, once you do these things, there is less motivation to back out.

I've already started sanitizing my Google accounts. Deleting, moving, organizing, etc.
My note will have the password to my Bitwarden account, and I get my Google to give my wife access to my photos once I'm inactive for 3 months. I've also cleared my history back to the creation of my accounts, and am deleting stuff off my phone. I will use an app to fill the free space on my device, then lock it down so that it's encrypted when i do a factory reset with a new Google account attached that no one will know the password to. The phone will be Google locked after that.

Serious question… is my iPhones 6 digit passcode not enough? I thought there was a big deal last year about the FBI couldn't get into an iPhone and Apple wouldn't help. Not that there's anything worth hacking my phone for, literally the "worst" thing on it is this website

I do have Face ID turned on but I would just disable that before I CTB so that nobody could simply point my phone at my face and get in

Similar question for my Mac. I use a password to log in, without that isn't it useless? Although I imagine it's more likely that someone could remove the hard drive and plug it in elsewhere

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer:
Yes, But investigating a dead person's laptop/phone/tablet is like locking the barn door after the cows escaped. What consequences will you suffer from it? What misery will you feel for CTB'ing? None! You'll be safe in your casket or urn, forever free of any life's punishments and abuses. Nothing will matter once you're dead. If anything, you can stick it to the survivors for driving to you CTB in the first place.

I have similar concern too. But I don't want to destroy/break those expensive computers and smartphones. Should I set Bitlocker encryption on my Windows laptop? What about setting Alphanumeric password for my iPhone? Are nowadays encryption technology reliable?

For Mac computers, you could just turn on the FileVault encryption in security and privacy settings.

For the details on how to do that: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204837

Of course they will. Anyone bothered to look was bothered to care to some degree about you, whether it is for the piece of mind or for the chunk of change they'll get for your 'junk'.

After reading everyone's posts in this topic; I really don't understand.
I speak from a very conceited and bias as point of view. If you are preplanning the most significant event in your life, why are you cutting corners in your preparations? For example, if you are planning to hang, why would you buy cheap rope or not weight check your support beam?
If I decided to hang, I would buy the nicest nylon rope and wrap it in a silk so that I could finally feel confident, comfortable and content about something that I have done.
I have often thought about this topic and what I should do. My conclusion is as follows; I would expunge every shameful aspect of my digital life, so there is nothing to find.
I would delete all irrelevant bookmarks, I would completely eradicate all internet activity. Furthermore, I would remove all passwords on all relevant devices and change all passwords for relevant accounts to a singular simple phrase. I would also cancel all subscription services to prevent any form of inconvenience for anyone who cared enough to take care of my affairs post departure.
My dilemmas are as such: I am a waste of space and burden to all those around me. The last thing I want to do is burden them further with any inaccessible 'junk' that they would have to further waste time on.
My perfect scenario is that everything aforementioned is complete and all my inane belongings including my own lifeless remains are packed away neatly to be easily disposed of while not to causing any further grief or burden to anyone.

Parents of two people I knew who passed away, not even from suicide, had them frantically trying to unlock their phone/pc passwords to see what they were doing and who they were in contact with. If they CTB, they will 100% try to get whatever info they can.

There will presumably be attempts, but I will make sure to wipe every hard drive I own before I leave, and possibly destroy them with a magnet afterwards, for additional safety. I will leave my thoughts and wishes and such to the people I care about, in letters to them, and I would like this and the memories they have, to be what there is for them. This will have more value and conclusion, than attempting to find anything in my files, anyway - it would only bring more confusion and questions and chaos, for them. I wish to leave them with good memories for a reason.
