Venting What is your occupation? Am I the only one who feels like they’ve contributed nothing to society or this world?

I checked all the boxes, did what they told me. Went to college, got that miserable office job, sucked it up for almost 20 years. Here I am wondering my purpose… and realizing… there isn't one. I'm 39, this sucks. I go to therapy, it helps sometimes :( anyway, it's been tough. I cry when I drive to work.

What's your occupation? Your job?

I'm sorry about how miserable you feel. It sucks when we do all the right things and yet our expectations aren't met.

I'm mostly preoccupied with school, but I also manage invoices for my father's business

I work in a manufacturing/ fabrication plant where we make signs , letters, logos.. I'm in the FCO -metal dept. , we cut the gamut basically.... aluminum, brass , bronze, copper, stainless steel... You name it, and we can Probably cut it.View attachment 103899

I'm a college student so I've never had a career. I've always wanted to do something big in life, but I've made mistakes in my early adulthood that's made that less likely like slacking off in college. I still have a chance to redeem myself but recently I started worrying about something I've never worried about before. If robots start doing everything before I can meaningfully contribute to society, then what is the point of my life? I've just lived a life of consumption and nothing I did ever mattered. I'm going to hold out for a few more years and see how things go and if they don't work out, I will commit suicide.

In my 50's. Did the college thing. I worked from the time I was 16 until a few years ago. Finally my life long mental illness issues did not allow me to work anymore.

I was at my last job for 20 years. Lots of work acquaintances and what I thought were friends. All gone now. I tried to keep in touch, but people weren't interested in staying in touch with the department "crazy".

I totally understand and relate to you feeling like you have no purpose. I don't believe there is any recovery from feeling like that. (I hope you'll be the one that does). I hope you'll keep giving therapy a chance. I'm still giving it a shot too. Be well.

Your friends/family also live within society. Food, clothes, education, basic safety are all things we owe to society on some level.

I was a creative freelancer. I loved my job- it meant everything to me. It's so hard to sustain financially though. I'm looking for a more stable job now but I don't want to be a wage slave. I'd much rather CTB.

I'm socially awkward and the worst part of working is when I'm placed on front counter and have to take peoples' orders. I'm usually slow and my mind fogs up and makes it hard to concentrate.

I had dreams of being a writer, graduated with an MA in Creative Writing. I lack motivation, I lost my confidence that I was writing anything worth reading. I also don't want to leave much of a trace behind so these days I'm glad I never finished or published my novels.

I work in software now. I work hard to keep my mind occupied but in reality I contribute very little to this world.

I study Neuroscience at university and I am absolutely terrible at it, worked in several scientific research labs and frequently made gravely stupid mistakes, don't really have any career prospects after I graduate because my body and mind aren't fit for the lab.

In my teenage years I worked in restaurants, fast food, retail shops, and call centers and I hated those professions so much, very high stress with minimal rewards. The only job I have ever did which I would consider rewarding and beneficial to society was doing part-time admin work for an organisation that provides support to young people in need.

But my mind refuses to let me do usefull things.

I have been a teacher working at private schools around the world. I have had a positive impact on hundreds of students lives personally and academically. My life has mattered, I have no doubt about that. The question for me now is: I am 58 years old and ... will the rest of my life still matter? I am tired. I don't feel like I have much more patience left. Can I still be an inspiring and effective teacher? Do I even want to continue to work? I don't want to get old and start to slowly fall apart. I want to leave this world KNOWING that I have left it a bit better than when I arrived and just be done. Does that mean I want to CTB? I could go either way. I DO have two bottles of N and a packet of Meta. (emetic) so when ever I make the choice, I'm well prepared.

I worked in automotive engineering since graduating college. Not much to be said for it. Basically, just drone work. Just working for the man to make obscenely rich people even more rich, and pay into a tax system that I really get nothing out of and don't expect to. I really didn't care about the work when I was doing it and I don't care about it now. Looking back, I really wish I would have studied a different subject.
