i want to go to college because it sounds really fun, but the student loan debt would be so terrible to deal with. would student loan debt transfer to my family after i die or something? or would it just be voided?

If your family co-signed on it it will be on them, but if they didn't it most likely won't be their responsibility to pay. You probably won't have to worry about your family having to pay it in the end.

Depends on where you are in the world... some parts of the world your family inherits your debt. As far as I know, in the US, as long as they didn't co-sign then your debts are your debts and nobody is obligated to pay them after you die.

A weird thing... you know those time-share deals? Where you sign up to "share" access to a vacation spot or whatever? Those can be a nightmare to get out of... and infamously, some of them have clauses in the contracts where when you die your timeshare ownership does automatically transfer to a relative. It's crazy, there are stories out there of people unknowingly inheriting a timeshare and then going through hell trying to get out from under it.

But student loans... would only be the responsibility of whomever signed up for them.

I have to ask, though... if you are in college for fun, and are actually having said fun, why would you be so sure you want to die after graduation? A lot can change by then if you are having fun.

As mentioned - probably depends on where you live and who signed up. My son ctb'd last January and his student loans were remitted automatically. I'm pretty sure he knew this :')

If you think that you wouldn't want to ctb after college then why would you ctb at all? In my opinion ctb is a last resort, a way out, not a goal in itself. Or do I misunderstand the point?

i think they are using it as a last crutch of hope. that they might find something to keep living for if they go to college. i also think that ctb is a last resort for a hopeless situation, but some people still have some hope they cling to, that they will find a new purpose or life and they wont have to turn to their last resort. these are just my two cents. im incredibly sorry for your loss. i hope you can find understanding and answers here

valid question. i have bp1... i go through long periods of time where i'm suicidal and not suicidal. i will probably still hate myself and my life after graduating college, but you can be miserable and keep living. i don't want that for myself. i wish i would've ctb'd at 13 to avoid the non-suicidal suffering that was most of my teen years. i know that my ending is likely going to be ctb no matter if that happens at 19, 25 or 40. so in my mind i should just do it while i'm suicidal now before i go through another long period of suffering without ctb and save myself the trouble.

as for spending a semester in college, it will be much better for me to ctb away from home to avoid traumatizing my family members or making someone in my home feel like it's their fault. hopefully this clears it up

I'm sorry life doesn't fit you, but I get it. I don't know if your family knows about your suicidal thoughts - probably not - but it will help them to know that it's not impulsive. Hope you find your peace one way or the other.
