So after 6 months on the waiting list, I finally met my therapist. Session lasted 30 mins and boy what a waste of time

Therapist: So tell me how have you been this past few months.

Me: The depression is crippling me. I also have severe agitation and I'm thinking about suicide all the time. There is no known root cause for this as I was fine then bang 1 year I was hit with severe depression for no reason.

Therapist: OK. What I want you to do when you are back home feeling depressed is to close your eyes and think back to your childhood years and think about your family's house, the furniture, the smells etc..

Me: Really? I need help for thos crippling depression, i don't see how going back to my childhood will help plus you don't know if I had a traumatic childhood or not. I actually didn't but that's not the point...

I left and told her I wouldn't be coming back to anymore sessions. I honestly felt more knowledgeable than her. They really don't have a clue!

Ugh I'm so sorry, that's awful. Like you say, it's a dangerous thing to suggest if you don't know someone's history. Imagining a safe space can be a grounding technique for some but only if you ask the person what their safe space is . Considering how common childhood trauma is in people with mental illness than that is a huge and reckless assumption to make. And surely that'd come in later sessions too, not suggesting coping strategies before even exploring the situation.
Some therapists really have no clue what mental illness is actually like. It'd be great if daydreaming really was a cure ! There are better therapists out there though, they're not all that useless. i've had mixed experiences.not sure how it works in ireland as i'm in england, but I'm guessing you don't get a choice of therapist ? It may be more wait but they may agree to trying you with another if you complain and say they were harmful though ?

therapists don't know jack. idk what they do in their schools, but all their advice could jsut be found on fuckin reddit threads. ive found its 1000x more helpful to just talk to other suffering ppl who'll empathise n have practical advice. normies who don't know what it's like will always think ur over-exaggarating, crazy, or just haven't tried hard enough n surely their normie suggestions will fix things. but therapist advice will only help ppl w mild anxiety, stress or phobias

Therapists just care about you giving them money per session, in between that they don't really seem to care about anything about you at all

I agree, going to the therapists is just a waste of money and time. They just give you unnecessary advices that doesn't even help.
