maybe if a bunch of us pooled our money and got a grant to build a live-in therapy village we could buy a piece of land somewhere. We could have a farm with fruits, vegetables and animals. we could have individual homes and a communal area for recovery practices, art, music etc. we could eventually have places where people could come and stay for a while if it could help them. Maybe there could be a grant to start a therapy/recovery center like this. I don't know which country, but maybe someone has some ideas? Maybe someone can think about how to access some kind of government money somewhere to do something like this?

eventually it could even be a place where mental health researchers or spiritual researchers could come and give lectures to the wider public, people could come and stay for a while in some kind of therapy retreat. even more healthy people who just wanted to learn about how to live more fulfilling lives. Maybe that could generate income to further the retreat. Maybe this could give some of us some way to use what we know to help others, become more fulfilled ourselves and maybe give us more purpose. Something like an alternative to mental health care as it stands now.

I'd be down, but I have nothing to offer other than my skills. Plus the only way to get everyone to the same country is to make a charity. Like some sort of mental health retreat charity. It would take a strong person to get that started. It isn't impossible though -- it just requires a serious enough base to get the ball rolling.

Alternatively, I have often thought about posting here for people to join me on the road to live like the days of old. Roaming nomads. Surviving as we go. It is a dream of mine as a potential alternative to my CTB.

We've done this thread before a few times. I ended up as an assistant dog groomer because there wasn't much call for a disgruntled alcoholic archaeologist.

Sounds kinda cultish to be honest but I guess it could fulfill its purpose for some people.

I like your thoughts on this. Does anyone know more about starting this kind of charity? And which country could be best?
Ive thought about the same thing, finding like minded souls who have tried regular life but have gotten to the point where they would try anything else to feel the sense of enjoying life again. Maybe this is something to keep in mind for the future.

disgruntled alcoholic archaeologist actually sounds like it could be an interesting life!

I knew there would be that reaction :pfff: I agree, it does. But who knows, maybe it could be more of a return to an outdated style of living that could provide more emotional fulfillment. Or maybe humanity is just past that stage and anything like that, even well intentioned, would just turn into a cult :pfff:

I know there are a bunch of hippy groups like this but with no goal and they usually they end up miserable and leave at some point, that sounds bad

Some of the drama you see here, no chance.

It'd be possible with a strong leader, but as mentioned that sounds cultish.

I'd love to do something like this though, off the grid.

Kind of like the movie The Village (2004), but without the extremist elements - like their stance on no modern medicine, electronics, isolation, etc. Not to mention those goofy monsters to induce fear of leaving. : )

Hahaha yes. Democracy, socialism? Nice ideas...but the only society that works is a benign dictatorship, and for that you just have to be lucky. Even then it's for a lifetime.

Youre right it would work with a strong, charismatic leader...

I spit out my drink with that post!!!! Ha!

I humbly offer to be the leader (joking - way joking, I just want peace, quiet, and serenity).

Off the grid - that used to be a dream of mine :)

Joking about jonestown of course doesnt take away how sad it was. Rip.
Watching that docunentary was so sad. In a way, the people just wanted what a lot of us do, fairness, equality, self sufficiency and peace. And they got it for a while. I even think jones started out with pure intentions, but the power and adoration corrupted him and he became a very bad human being.

What about, like, an apartment with a spare bedroom so people passing through / fleeing life / who needed some away-time to figure out what to do could crash for a while? That could be doable...

I lived with some people for a while who rented a house where they used one floor for living-space for residents, and the other floor for some public events, music, workshops, etc...

I highly recommend taking the people who agree and try managing something much simpler (e.g. a Facebook page) with each other over the space of maybe 4-5 months. See how well that goes ;-)

A friend of mine and I were talking about making an intentional community like this not too long ago. People can stay short-term to get themselves in a better place, and there'd be other buildings to rent out for art spaces, yoga studios, music halls, etc. to make some money to cover taxes and upkeep. Longer term residents can pay dues based on ability to pay. Realistically though, I feel like the idea might be financially unsustainable.

As long as we get to shave our heads, wear black track suits, and white Nike Air Jordans!

Land is cheap as hell in Wyoming, granted there's nothing much out there except mountains and snow, you can get 40-100 acres of land for under $50k

Downside: everything else about WY. (Except the soda fountain in Chugwater, 'cause it's kinda cute.) Sure makes it easier to stay on a nice, windy parcel of land, though!
