Oh thanks I understand now thank you.. I always considered using a belt but was unsure how to securely tie the other end. Any suggestions? What knot?
Knot wise a simple knot (what is the standard knot even called?) should be fine. I'd be more worried about adding additional things that can break and how to attach it to the end of the belt.

I'll send you a pic via PM later because im not at home atm :) if I don't remind me :) yep it's meant to tighten
Thank you!

We'll see now anyway.

I loop it a few times over the bar and then just do a normal knot... I can send you a pic later in a PM if you like... It holds good
Please do, thank you so much.

I found something above my height by several inches at least with nothing under it works best for me. So it allows much of your body to drift slightly backwards and it holds the belt at an angle that seems much more steady than trying it from like the side of a jail style bunk bed or w/e where you have the bottom bed to contend with.

First I loop the end of the belt through the ring so that it forms a loop where my head will go. Then I tie the end of the belt to this bar I have in my wardrobe... it's pretty sturdy... and put my head through the loop, make sure that the buckle (ring) is under my left ear and slump down...
Oh, okay. Got it. Thanks! Although I'm gonna have to buy an awful long belt to be able to put it round my neck and tie it to something.

Do you fasten the belt after you put it around your neck?

It seems like it but it not necessarily true :) unless you have an extremely thick neck?

Lol! Sorry, what you said about me having a thick neck made me giggle a little. I don't think my neck is unusually thick but I think I'll try and get s longer belt to be on the safe side. You said you've been using a fabric belt with a metal ring, right?

I just tie it with a knot to a metal rod... You will probably have to experiment with this though to see what holds best. My belt is easy to tie because it is from a soft material

Can you show a picture of this setup? Feel free to pm.

I don't see how it's possible to tie a normal belt to anything. I have literally no clue how anyone uses a normal belt for hanging themselves.

me too. people that have done it make it seem so easy but I'm not really understanding how. although this post has been a help, so I think I kind of understand a bit better. a visual of it would be great though.

I'm going to practice later. One day when practice goes well I'll just think 'go for it' . Think overplanning and overthinking is my enemy. When I go I think it will be more like that

Projecting neurotic worrying problems out on everyone~ Anyone 'practicing' this just keep in mind when it gets into position correctly after playing around with it it's not going to be several minutes of feeling what its like it's legit you'll go out in seconds and not come back. I'm mainly posting this because rope and even the belt can feel awkward and like it isn't gonna work until it suddenly is in the right spot. Want to make sure there is a choice.

Honestly I overthink everything so much - if I accidentally kill myself by being stupid - that's awesome.

Just to add my experience to this very helpful thread:

I've been using a climbing style carabeaner in the same way you've used the metal ring/buckle. I haven't used slipknots much to compare, but the carabeaner works just the same as you've described with the same results. Ghost hug in literal seconds.

I also 100% agree that the weight has to go in fast and all at once in order for things to go well. That was pivotal for me and was my "breakthrough."
