No offense to younger people, but I find it difficult to relate as I have fought this for decades. I also, plain and simple, do not feel comfortable discussing this topic with much younger people due to the fact that I was a teacher for years; it just doesn't feel right. I want them to live and to explore.
Please contact me if you are an "older" person who has also battled this for years. Thank you. Peace.

Hi. I am a female, older (in my forties), and have been dealing with depression and thoughts of suicide for a long time. If you, or anyone here, would like to chat, I'm here.

I am male and 51. Never sought any form of clinical advise, as Hannibal Lecter said "Do you think you can dissect me with that blunt tool?" Seen too many people go to doctors and just have pills thrown at them.

I understand wanting to talk to people of your own age, but just because someone is young, that doesn't invalidate their problems. It's not a competition about who has it the worst, or who's been fighting it the longest.
I think @Bea described the situation quite well. If your vocation was to educate and get the potential out of young people, then it could be difficult to have that type of conversation. Its a poor simile but its like a doctor becoming an executioner, but that's how I interpreted it

Same here. Not only do I not always "get" youngsters, they don't "get" me. Ageism is a real thing. I recently had a Millennial doctor lecture me...."A person your age should know better..." Barf.

I have a son in his twenties and would feel uncomfortable talking about suicide with others his age. Although my life sucks, I still want others to succeed. I feel the poster said what he said out of thoughtfulness.

I am absolutely not discounting younger people, as I have struggled with this since my teenage years. I just don't feel comfortable discussing the topic with younger people, as I described. My job has always been to inspire and encourage them. I think it's understandable that I would want to talk about this with people who are closer to my age right now, is all. Peace.

I didn't have a particular question. I just wanted to talk to some OLD FOLKS. lol ;)

OK, wow. I'd like to talk about battling this for lotsa years..........

OK, wow. I'd like to talk about battling this for lotsa years..........
Also, as I mentioned, I am not comfortable talking with younger people on this topic because I was a teacher for over twenty years and feel compelled to encourage young people, not help them kill themselves. Ouch. I really hope I don't get banned for being age-ist.

Yes, thank you, Stan. I'm overwhelmed ~ in a good way ~ with the amount of response.

I'm 33 is that old enough? I feel I've more in common with the older generation now since I'm always trying to stop them making the same mistakes I did. I'm totally out of touch already since they grew up while I had problems. I still understand them more than they understand me because I've been in their position they haven't been in mine

LOL!!!!!! I suppose 35 qualifies as long as you are at least mentally 45. ;)

I respect anyone, of any age, who is dealing with suicidal ideation. It's my issue that I struggle talking with younger people about it. It's due to my background.

Hey Bea, I wanted to throw my hat in the ring. I've been dealing with my MDD and suicidal thoughts since age 10 and recently developed an issue with anxiety. I'm now 42. I'm here if you ever want to chat. Be well.

It does suck to suffer for decades, but that doesn't have to be your reality. But, if it turns out to be so, here we are.

It sucks but we don't have a choice in the hand dealt. Sorry, it's Major Depressive Disorder. Back when I was diagnosed at 13, it was clinical depression.

It didn't have to be the reality at all. What's taken fifteen years could have been over in a day. If that isn't reason enough to commit suicide I don't know what is

43 year old checking in.

Whilst I've been in a pretty dark place for most of my adult life, hindsight has shown me that you probably don't want to rip yourself off by deciding to ctb at a young age. My best years where when I was 37-39, and I would never have seen those had I going through with ctb in my early 30s. Of course, things went rapidly downhill after I turned 40, and I can't see there being any real chance of improvement between now and when I pass.

I've got a lot of opinions in relation to ctb and age; the two main ones being that the younger someone ctb the more tragic it is, and that everybody aged 50 or older should have the right to choose voluntary euthanasia even if they are otherwise physically healthy.
