Discussion How come I don't read suicide by N in the news?

It looks like N has been very popular since I joined this site this week. I have this macabre
fascination of searching suicides in the news, mostly gunshots, jumping, overdoses. How come I have not come across a story of suicide by N anywhere?

actually this might be a good thing. I don't want my CBT to be on the news. My first option is jumping but always gets news attention.

My bets are on this as well. If people knew they could have it they would want it. If enough people do things could get ugly for the government.

So many people want to die but the lack of a clean and peaceful exit keeps them from even starting to research..

Hard to get and not very dramatic. "She drank an expensive, deliberately fatal, non-recreational drug, leaned back in her chair, and died quickly and peacefully without any drama." Not exactly the sort of thing that sells newspapers.

It's a good question because surprisingly, when you think of it, it makes n sound almost too good to be true. Though I know it's not. Well, I hope it's not. I had some powdered n years ago and I tested it a bunch of times, it does seem potent.

I was thinking about this too...I guess it is just too damn peaceful and they probably don't want people knowing about it at all. One of the things that kept me from jumping was the drama of it, how they would publish my name, most likely, and dig into my past and say I'm mentally ill...well...why do I care about it though? I guess the second thing, oh what's our favorite thing? Survival instinct? And being a coward. Plus, I decided I would be one of the saps that probably lived.

Right? You'd think if anyone were in a position to have access to the most peaceful methods of self deliverance like nembutal it would be rich celebrities. But no, they seem to mostly commit suicide using the same nightmarish, risky methods as the average person lol. Such a waste.

Did it contain a list of people who CTB'd and method behind their name? It was about UK people? I've been searching for it for some time now and haven't found it anymore. Would like to know it too.

Where I live, the 5 or 6 people who succeeded jumping and a few that drown themselves, all but one made the news, unless there has been more that are "hushed up." In two instances of drowning in the same lake, the woman's name was all over the place, and the second one (a guy) was kept anonymous. Yes, I know too much about their deaths, I obsessed with this all summer (death and methods.) All of the jumps were public and in the news.

Where I live in the US there's a specific policy of not reporting suicides in the news. There are the occasional pedestrian deaths or solo car accident deaths which I now think are probably suicides.

Ironic, how that journalistic discretion doesn't apply to the slaughter of kids in a school, or joyous people at concerts or clubs.

I was really wanting to move to Norway a few years ago, and I was impressed by how devoted the press there was to avoiding the name of the man who shot up the island full of kids. If they also don't use the term "suicide", I at least need to commend them for not holding to a double standard.

All that said, I suspect Susannah is right: to broadcast that there is a painless, straighforward way to ctb would almost certainly result in others seeking it out.

There are articles, usually about young people but sometimes about the elderly. It's not very dramatic or interesting compared to an impulsive suicide, and the people who do it rarely are considered of interest unless they're rich and choose Dignitas.

I do believe journalists feel there is little benefit to reporting about it too, and possible harm to be done by reporting on the method and that it is obtainable. In my country at least, the typical guideline on suicide reporting is that there must be some positive or useful angle—which is played with loosely, to be sure, but still.

If you read articles about suicides you will soon realise the average N suicide has little in common with them. It is not at all sensational. N articles typically focus on the evils of the dealers and right to die groups, the tragedy to the family, etc. or the usual Exit-related angle of it.

Many people die without their suicides being reported in the news. And there are probably more articles than we know of: 'overdose' is a vague word and I don't look any further into it.

Finally, yes, it is a rare method compared to all the other suicides. Look up the suicide stats for your area and you might be surprised.

Yes, not sure if was in UK I do recall alot of gunshot suicide so it may have been in US.

I actually think that it's more to do with the fact that the main proponents of N are catering to people who are already suffering from a terminal illness, or are very old or something, as a form of euthanasia... so it can look like an accidental death if no autopsy is done and they don't leave evidence lying around. I don't think it's so common for people who are suicidal to know a lot about it.

That's the same reason I am keeping from too much hope in the SN method. The lack of reports is too discouraging to know if it really works reliably

I've found several autopsies from suicide using SN if that helps. I've also read about several near death experiences with SN where people almost die intentionally or unintentionally (medical journals).
