Have you been a member of any other pro-choice communities?

Just wondering for how many people here, SS is their first time in a community like this. I lurked on LostAllHope for a few days when I was in middle school (yes, in hindsight, I agree I as a minor probably shouldn't have been on there). What about you guys?

Yup, sounds about right. It must have been relatively easy to find because I don't imagine middle-school me would have had the drive or perseverance or know-how to go beyond the first several pages of Google results. I'm pleased that the resources available here on SS are much better than those available back then,

It was before I joined SS. Tried to become a member of Exit, but they have a no-under-50's policy and you need to send photo ID to prove you are over 50. I know they make exceptions, so I asked what sort of things, if any, qualify for an under 50's membership. I explained that I am fond of their philosophy and works, that I am suffering greatly from chronic illness, I do not expect to be alive for much longer and becoming a member would bring me much peace of mind. The first email I received was a standard automatic one that was quite unhelpful, so I sent another email.

A representative responded, and bluntly said "We will not answer any questions. Send photo ID if you wish to join". I replied saying that I didn't want to send my photo ID until I could at least ask about possible exceptions to the 50+ rule, and purchasing the PPH. I explained my health conditions to them and mentioned that I am in some distress over not having access to information about peaceful options to end my life if the need arises, I asked again if I might qualify. I signed the emails with "warmest regards, *my real name*." (not going to share what my real name is here but to use an example I will say Lee)

I received a reply about one week later that just said " ...It's your choice, "Lee". "

They did not respond to any other emails I have sent since then.

Yep. SS was there for me and it's everything I was hoping to gain from joining Exit, and more. It was a huge relief when I found this place.

I was a member of the SS subreddit before it got banned, and that's how I ended up on here.

I also took a philosophy class in university about contemporary issues in modern society where I spoke up about the right to die. I was never a big participant in class because I was too self-conscious and felt too ill, but I just couldn't stay quiet about it. I couldn't complete the course because I was hanging on by a thread even back then, but it was a really interesting course and I would love to have been able to finish it if everything wasn't so fucked up with me.

I was a member of a pro death penalty site. That was when I saw death as a bad thing and the ultimate punishment. Since I've grown more pessimistic about life, my thoughts are sometimes living is worse than dying.

I'm pretty sure that I was originally a member of alt.suicide, which I remember as this weird mishmash of people wanting to find useable suicide methods, people just wanting to vent about their crummy lives, people who were there seeking support in a time of desperation, people there to make fun of the suicidal people, people who were there to try and see if they could actually drive someone to suicide, people who figured that it was a great place to proselytize about their religion, and who knows what else. It wasn't actually very useable for any of those purposes.

Alt.suicide.holiday was kind of a joke, as I remember it. It was sort of a parody of the "real" suicide newsgroup, or a place to post commentary about it or about suicide in general. I didn't find it clever or funny (the vast bulk of Usenet wasn't), and it's likely I never posted there. A lot of people swear A.S.H. was worthwhile, and it may well have been, either before or after the early-to-mid 90's, which is when I had access to it. (Back in the day, the only way to get on the internet was to have access to a computer lab on a university campus. Once you graduated, the plug was pulled, as weird as that sounds now.)

ASH was a nice place when I was there in the early 2000s I believe. There were some spammers and trolls but otherwise very thoughtful and compassionate people. It felt a lot more personable than any forum I have found since, although that may be because I have changed (not for the better).

I see, are you still on ASH? I first found out about ASH three years ago and it seemed like a pretty cool place. I forgot about it though and didn't remember until last year. By then it was too late and the original ASH had gotten removed :(( I joined the new one but it isn't very active and doesn't have much info about suicide.
