  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

About an hour ago the police came to my front door telling me Discord has given them information I had bought sodium nitrite with the intent to commit suicide. They just asked for the sodium nitrite, I gave it to them and they went their marry way. Just a quick warning, a mere slap on the wrist.

The police told me the investigation started in November and the police just now came to my house. Of course I'll be buying more but I wanted to post this as a warning to others.

Hold on, so the police were notified by discord that you had sn? Any other details you could share regarding this as i'm a bit confused since it's quite different from what's been posted lately.

I have no other details, they just said Discord gave them information. They called the police and crisis line, this is unheard off...
First I got a call from the crisis line then the police showed up.

That honestly doesn't add up. Discord isn't a payment processor, so it wouldn't have access to what you bought, let alone why. It's not like you're ordering SN through discord itself. Unless you explicitly told someone in DMs that you bought SN with intent to CTB and that person reported it, there's no direct reason Discord would flag or forward anything.

Also, law enforcement generally needs a reason to open an investigation, and that usually involves a report or clear evidence, not just chat logs unless they were flagged and submitted by another user. So unless someone you confided in passed the info along (intentionally or not), this feels more like a case of someone close to you raising concern than Discord randomly tipping off the cops.

Not calling you a liar, just urging caution around assuming platforms are actively monitoring this shit without cause. Misinformation about surveillance causes more panic, and people deserve to know the actual risks, not fear mongered ones. If you think you did get reported by someone, that's worth being honest about. Otherwise, the story has gaps.

I know, at this point I want to call myself a liar

I told several people I would use SN and I sent pictures of the SN on the platform, but this was 2 months ago. Someone most likely reported me. Discord has information like my credit card and address because I bought nitro before. The crisis line told me Discord called them and that they then called the police. The police gave me the full details.

So, they had a warrant that they actually handed to you (yours to keep and which you could take a picture of and show us, redacted of course) demanding confiscation of your SN? In the USA why would you hand over anything without a warrant?

No warrant, just handed the SN because I didn't want any trouble. Especially since my parents were saying they would get me committed, they're paying for my college education so I have to stay on good terms.

Well, that's an explanation. The other "issue" is why Discord would have any of your information. Discord does not process payments for anything. Like any other "business", they utilize 3rd party payment processors. Discord never sees any of your personal information, especially financial information, which would show your billing address and such.

I think the address is recorded with discord upon payment, the financial part of the info is probably not on their database due to PCI/DSS

One time, I did post a picture of my ID to prove my age with Discord user support.

Other than that, I'm struggling to process how this occurred. They said investigation started back in November.

Because I thought nothing would happen, I was wrong. But even then, this doesn't line up because I got the sodium nitrite this February.

This shit is getting egregious asf like when they take aeay the SN do they think then people are automatically no longer struggling with suicidality orrrr?

Like where is even the bullshit attempt at offering some kinda supportive resources?

Taking away someones method doesn't fix the problem and I dare say it just makes it worse.

Sorry this happened to you OP.

Fuck the police, this is a fucking conspiracy against us.

Now, it'd be important to hide your IP address when using these services. That's how they can track you. In my country there's a suicide chat website that will call the police on you based on your IP. When things get worse I'm going to go there to vent with a VPN on.

It's probably only given upon the optional purchase of nitro. However, a bigger concern is online phone books, that can turn a name and surname into an address with a few dollars. There are ways to opt out though, the process varies by service (or use data removal services like DeleteMe and Incogni)

Wait, what?? They call the police in a chat helpline? How the fuck would that help someone? I mean, it could at best prevent your CTB, but the police arriving and making a fuss at my home would only make me wanna CTB even more in the long run. What is your country and what chatline is that, never gonna use it.

Hiya , did you inform anyone about the SN? Because it is very unlikely that discord themselves checked your dms for sn unless you contacted discord support or informed someone about the SN who probably called the cops

I know, it's evil. Let me show you what they say on the website, I used ChatGPT to translate what they said.

An IP address is only used in cases of an acute emergency, child welfare concern, or crime. According to the law, we must contact the emergency services, child welfare authorities, or the police based on the conversation data. If the police request it, we will provide them with the IP address to ensure that the customer receives assistance. – From the website of this helpline

And I'm based in the EU and this chat is meant specifically for young people. I don't want to mention any names because I'm going to keep my location hidden for as long as I can since apparently my country can do something like what's shown above.

Next time police come without a warrent you can shut the door in their face and tell them to fuck off unless they have a Warrent singed by a judge. You have that right as a US citizen.

Discord offers no end-to-end encryption and actually proactively scans all messages, attachments and whatnot, for illegal or harmful activity. So it may be the case that no one reported your messages, and that Discord's system automatically flagged one of your messages or images. When flagged, once a human verified the content as indeed illegal or harmful, Discord is likely obliged to share this information with the police. The quote below contains the relevant parts of Discord's Privacy Policy.

The information we collect
  • Content you create. This includes any content that you upload to the service. For example, you may write messages or posts (including drafts), send voice messages, create custom emojis, or post other content that you create with features that we develop. You may also upload and share files through the services. This also includes your profile information and the information you provide when you create servers.
How we use your information
  • We use your information to monitor for and take action against users and content that violate our Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, and other policies. This includes responding to user reports, generating transcriptions of content as part of our investigation, detecting fraud and malware, and proactively scanning attachments and other content for illegal or harmful activity. We also use certain information, which may include content reported to us, content that violates our Terms of Service, and certain other content widely available on the service (such as public posts, usernames, avatars, banners, user profiles, server names, server icons, and server banners), to create systems and models that can be automated to more swiftly detect, categorize, and take action against prohibited content or conduct.
How we disclose your information
  • To comply with the law. We may disclose information in response to a request for information if we believe disclosure is required by law, including meeting national security or law enforcement requirements.
  • In an emergency. We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that it's necessary to prevent serious harm to a person.
Source: discord.com/privacy

Also, a police officer telling you they received a tip from Discord doesn't exclude the possibility that they received more than one tip on you from different sources. Maybe Discord's report to the police was just one piece of the puzzle to find you, and from the police's perspective, help you get in touch with proper health channels.

Next time police come without a warrent you can shut the door in their face and tell them to fuck off unless they have a Warrent singed by a judge. You have that right as a US citizen.
I think it's an exigent circumstance (emergency aid doctrine, an exception to the Fourth Amendment) if the police officers are aware that someone plans on taking their life and have the means to do so at any moment of time. This allows the officers to enter the residence without knocking and waiting for the property owner's permission in order to prevent harm to a person. I don't know to what extend they're allowed to rummage through your property and confiscate items, but I'd assume taking away SN is part of rendering emergency aid. Either way, simply keeping the door shut is indeed the best way to keep yourself save, provided they don't threaten to break down the door.

What kind of discord were you in? If you go around telling random people that you're planning to ctb and give the specifics on how you plan to do it, you've invited them into your personal business and they don't want to feel responsible for standing by and allowing you to die. Making public statements like this can be interpreted as a "cry for help" for which they answered in the only way they knew how. Your discord friends probably reported you to the admins and after some internal sleuthing to narrow down your identity they (discord) contacted the authorities.

Discord as a communications platform that does get used by bad actors to plan and commit crimes absolutely has ways to identify and track down users and pass that info to LE to a reasonable extent. People have been arrested for posts on much more anonymous sites than discord.
