My mom forced me to get up. She says that I should be "up by now." She wants me to have "good habits" and "live a healthy lifestyle." Why is waking up early seen as something honorable and virtuous though? Some people (like me) are night owls. I'm nocturnal. I shouldn't be shamed for that

Because society has been skewed towards associating early rising with productivity. Quite frankly, it doesn't matter what time you get up, it's what you do while you're awake that matters.

I used to have a minimum wage job where I was working the closing shift and I would be up till 3 am. Then I switched to the morning shift and I started getting up at 6 am. My productivity during the day did not change. The only thing that changed was the hours that I was doing it.

Because of society and work ethic I guess. I´m an owl as well. Less noise, no bright sun light. Just peace and quiet.
I hate waking up. I especially hate the sun and the sunlight. It's too bright. I hate the hustle and bustle of the day. I prefer the darkness and tranquility of the night

I do nothing when I'm awake, and my mom is mad at me for that. She wants me to "do something" and "be productive" aka get a job and make money

There is no point in waking up early.
Actually, there is no point in waking up at all
I am just gonna lay in bed and rot
I see no point getting up and facing existence in this hellish abomination
Fuck that, I'm awake in bed by about 7am because of my insomnia, but don't get outta bed until 11am. Waking up early is shit especially when you have nothing to look forward to
that sounds awful. I woke up 630 am for work with lack of sleep and it was hell. Can't imagine going through that daily

I was actually up at 7 am (don't ask me why, I don't know; probably because of the sunlight) and I was going to go back to sleep, but she forced me to actually get up. I went to bed at 4 am though so I literally only slept for 3 hours lol

Because of the industrial revolution. Labor and machinery was standardized in grand scales, so everyone had to get up at the same time even though studies now show humans have diverse sleeping patterns and individuals are different. In small tribes, someone was always awake in the village/camp and many had biphasic sleeping patterns.

Your mom has no right to demand anything. It was her who chose to bring you here without asking you if you want this life.

"Sign of character" just means making profit for the capitalists (owning class)
My family is part of the intelligentsia and I don't want to make profit for the capitalists. In fact, that's the main thing driving me to suicide. Unfortunately, I inevitably will have to (if I don't ctb before then)

Because the majority of people are stupid. There's nothing virtuous about being forced to get up early every day, or be a night shift wage slave every day. Getting up early is for people who genuinely enjoy being awake in the mornings but have no need to do it for their plantation schedule. Doing it for any other reason is a form of torture.

What you really need to do is become rich magically so you can be a NEET in your own mansion. All you have to do is start a business, become a billionaire overnight, and before you know it, you'll be making a profit for free from wage slaves like me lmao. Not that having a member of sasu as a boss would be so bad.

Been there went through it. When I was still working I had to get up at 6. I only managed to fall asleep at 3 am because I had to wait for peace and quiet to settle to be able to lay down at all. Sleeping was another issue because I knew I was always wrecked a couple of hours later. I only had to be at work by 8:30 or 9 am, but I needed time to prepare and do my routines to be able to go out and work. I negotiated my office hours before I accepted the job as my condition. But that was the best deal I could get. Initially they wanted me in by 7:30 am. Having to leave to get into rush hour, which I can´t do. I don´t just function like others.

I had 30 days off per year mandatory. But I couldn´t just take one or two days to have a long weekend. I had to hand in my time off days months before taking them and I had to take one week minimum then and only on school holidays since I worked at a school. I never went on vacation and don´t need an entire day. Just give me flexibility so that when I am overwhelmed I can just call in and take a day. Nope. I was forced to take one week minimum getting out of my routine for work and didn´t do anything then struggle to go back to work. It felt like punishment.

I hate the birds singing because they would always wake me up when I was at college. They literally sang at 4 and 5 am. I was chronically sleep deprived when I was in college lol

Conclusion duplicated as TL:DR;

"All that bullshit I said and I really just mean: if you're going to change it will come naturally and not because your mom insulted your character. I was a dedicated night owl, even worked the overnight shift, and now I am not, and there's really no difference except for which animals make noise in the bushes."

Well it's cuz it sucks, and it takes willpower and discipline to get up early. I've been up since 4AM this morning feeding chickens. JK. I have no reason to exist... I woke up because I was freezing cold and I suffered through a bunch of bullshit I hated like a freezing cold outhouse and the sun's not even up so I gotta use my phone as a flashlight

And then I got to spend time all by myself because I forced myself to suffer like that. And that was nice and I thought to myself that all these other apefaced fucks just can't wait to wake up and make the Earth a more nasty place for me but in that moment it was just me and some frogs and I was at peace.

So in that way it sorta does build my character. I get extra time of day that others can't participate in, and I get that by tolerating pain, discomfort and exhaustion that the other people don't have to experience.

There's also the average behaviour to consider: there's a benefit to living while businesses are open. I also haven't seen any studies supporting the existence of night owls.

I've seen interesting ones suggesting a biphasic sleep pattern is more natural to us but not that some of us are nocturnal and others aren't. So in my personal world I think it's a lack of sleep hygiene and discipline and now I sound exactly like your mother lol.

I spent most of my life a night owl and now I enjoy morning frogs because I was forced to but not by other people or their opinions. It just happened. I didn't choose "I am gonna become disciplined", I literally ran out of options in supporting myself and now I live a terrifying cold life without any good rest. So don't let me tell you it was the waking up which built character lol

I was tested to have the night owl gene or at least be more likely to be a night owl in genetics lab. It was like a certain number of repeats that made me one

While you absolutely did do that experiment I'd like to see the paper identifying a night owl gene

Other then maybe health there is no actual reason why someone should be awake in the early hours. I won't comment on health because I don't care to look into it.

People who stay up at night are very much needed by society. It's very beneficial if someone guards the cave at night to protect from bears etc. or tends to the fire so it doesn't go out.
In modern times it's still important. People maintaining powerplants, taxi drivers, locksmiths, police, doctors, firefighters, they are all very much needed during the night.
That of course only holds significance for people who contribute to society. In some countries you even get paid more during the night but that's just because of how undesirable being up at night is considered.

The downside is that most of the world is centred around daytime. A lot of things are either unavailable or difficult to have during the night. Doing basic shopping and having friendships are examples of this.

For people like me and you who couldn't care less it's of no importance other than trying to please the people who are providing us with something.
