I can't speak for other parts of the uk like Scotland or Wales. But I've lived in England my entire life and it's such an unnecessarily depressing country. I won't specify where I'm from for safety reasons, but I've visited many different parts of this country. And it all has some strange underlying depressiveness to it. And no I'm not just projecting my own feelings on to this country as a whole, I've visited other countries before. Like spain and my home country and I didn't get the same vibe from them at all. Yet no matter where I go in england, it just feels fucking depressing. And it's not just me that feels this, many of my former friends that have lived here their entire lives have felt this way. Even my mom's friend who immigrated here from another country, that lived with me and my family for many years in my childhood. She came from a certain place in a certain country that is not a very nice place to live at all, and even after growing up there. She still thinks this country is a shit hole. I feel sorry for the people that could potentially have to live the rest of their lives here. If I choose to live, I can't wait to get my degree and get the hell out of here.

Cost of living is bonkers. The average house price has rapidly outstripped the affordability of the average person. Rent is insane, and that is assuming you haven't got a scumbag landlord who is happy to leave you living in squalor. Energy bills are at an all time high, whilst poor old Doris dies of hypothermia in her flat as she can't afford to put a few more quid in the meter

Employment is much more precarious with zero hour contracts, and even when it isn't salaries have not increased anywhere near inflation. It is wrong when people working full time on minimum wage still need to claim Universal Credit to survive.

Head into virtually any city centre, and you will see the unfortunate souls in society who have self medicated with drugs and/or alcohol propping up the doorway of abandoned shops. Bonus points if you have beggars harassing you at a cash point.

I know it's a cliché, but I think the weather plays a role. Spain has over 300 sunny days per year, whilst UK closer to around 166. A lot of the remaining 200 non sunny days feature gales or thick heavy grey cloudy drizzle of perpetual twilight.

Then you have the food. I grew up on beans on toast, marmite on toast, fish fingers, weetabix, walkers crisp, mcvities digestive biscuits, and Cadbury's dairy milk. When I wanted to do some fancy cooking, I'd make myself instant mash with grated cheese and salad cream! Freshly cooked healthy food was not a big part of my childhood.

I do think both these factors have a real impact on brain development and increases the risk of depression.

I'm indian so I was fortunate enough to grow up with pretty good food lol. And ironically enough rain is one of my favourite kinds of weather.

starmer has fucked our country up. you have to wait months for medication .you go to a&e wait hours with an injury just to be seen by an unprofessional nurse. you go out for walks and get harassed by gypsies, chavs and crackheads down the street. Theft is high . Knife crime is higher than ever. Inflation is immense. Weather is too hot or too cold. We are constantly shit on as people and called colonisers. ect. Its a mix and to be perfectly honest I do not want to live here. Leave or end

I agree. Especially with all the shit in our food now. Our lives would be a lot better without a lot of what we eat. But then the weather is constantly terrible and drizzly or cold. But not cold enough to wear a coat because you sweat. but not warm enough to not have one.

1) Weather
2) The architectural vandalism that occurred post WWII (brutalism etc)

Some bits are still beautiful though

nothing in most parts of the UK is well maintained, when everyone has a meh "could be worse" attitude they simply don't care that everything around them has been afflicted with mold and rot. That and not seeing the sun the vast majority of the time makes you physically/mentally ill from vitamin D deficiency

In my reading, it seems the post WW2 world was not good to England.
After taking a beating standing up and giving better than the received, it was like the air got let out of their balloon.
Recovery was slow. The world economy started passing them by. Jobs ran scarce and it seemd the drain was looming closer.
The 1970's were not good for anyone with an industrial base. They just could not absord the damage as well.
Politics goes to hell in difficult times as real solutions are unpopular and lying gets nothing done.
The decades just roll by.
The Faulklands gave a little boost until politics crept back in. There was that Irish problem that continued to nibble away at whatever good thoughts remained.
Add very old infrastructure and yes, strange architecture choices, and the new world is less James Bond and more Helter Skelter.

The English are just very odd people I don't think they can do anything about it it's so hard wired. Many live very lonely strange lives and they deserve to be pitied. But I do think the weather plays a role it is just unbearable when there are so many grey days. But yes the country is going to hell and I can only foresee a greater divide between haves and have nots which the rich will address by getting us to hate immigrants and other minorities.
I'd leave if I was able to. No question but I will always love it in some strange way.
I'm half English half Scots so I do have a dog in this fight.

The UK is a dismal country full of people who don't care about anything, don't have any beliefs, no aspirations, no empathy, no desire to fix anything or help anyone at all. It's just everyone for themselves and is one of the worst developed countries in the world.
