In the Peaceful Pill Handbook, they provide chemistry instructions on how to make Nembutal (pentobarbital) at home.

These instructions mention certain videos which demonstrate the chemical techniques, such as the video: "Betty Cooks With Sodium", which used to be viewable on YouTube here:

Does anyone know where I can obtain these instructional videos on Nembutal synthesis?


This 2008 article says these videos are included in the digital edition of the PPH.

Does anyone know if the latest edition of the Peaceful Pill Handbook includes these videos on how to make Nembutal?

The general synthesis instructions I found in the chapter "The Peaceful Pill Project" in the 2018 Peaceful Pill Handbook, which you can download from here. The relevant instructions from that chapter are also posted here.

But apparently there are also videos made by Exit International that more clearly explain the procedure in that chapter.


Easy One Pot Synthesis Of Barbiturates Starting From Di-ethyl Malonate — this guy made various barbiturates at home, using a different alcohol (namely 1-butanol) to the ethanol used in the PPH, which he says has the advantage that you don't need to use a pressure vessel (pressure cooker) as you do in the PPH approach.


Erowid Nembutal Synthesis:

Pentobarbitone. (Called Nembutal or Pentobarbital.) 26.7 g of clean metallic sodium are dissolved in 400 g of anhydrous (dry) ethanol.

To this, a solution of 100 g of 1-methyl butyl-ethyl malonic ester and 37.2 g of dry urea is added. The mixture is heated for 4 to 6 hours in an autoclave, or refluxed for 20 to 40 hours.

The alcohol is then removed by distillation. The residue is dissolved in water and this aqueous solution is acidified with hydrochloric acid.

The precipitated product is filtered, washed with cold water, and recrystallized from boiling water. Yield: depends on your ability to exclude H2O from the beginning of the reaction, mp: 127-130°C.
