But how can this be used to prove/disprove anything about what happens after death?

It can't. But so far there has been zero evidence that consciousness exists outside of a working brain.

exactly... so it is perspective after all

No. It's wishful thinking on the part of humans and actually part of our inbedded survival instinct which is our dna molecule, nothing more.

Humans needed gods to survive because of consciousness itself, always folding over on itself with questions about why we suffer so.

Gods were invented by humans in an attempt to control and make meaning of a meaningless universe.

And if an afterlife exists I am not sure I would want to be part of it—this "life" experience on this planet has been torture for me and many many others so I would naturally want to ask the so called fourth dimension creator why the fuck I came here.

Mark Twain said something like "I didn't exist for millions of years before I was born and it didn't trouble me one bit".

Refer to this https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Scientism to understand your stance on scientism because you seem to worship science.

All I'm saying is be open minded not close minded.

Just because you don't remember before you were born doesn't mean you didn't exist. Do you remember everything in your life? Do you remember 1st grade? What about 10th grade? We are embedded in this universe and as long as it repeats over and over we will too.

I agree though. To me, an afterlife is pretty much guaranteed and I'm sad because of that. I don't want an afterlife.

But wait, haven't you heard the latest theory on this? All you have to do is google 'consciousness' and you can get a list of articles about this very subject by a bunch of 'dime-store' philosophers making money off of their theories.

I recall vividly memories beginning around age 3 because I had a functional brain. Key word: a brain.

You can't equate not existing with now scientifically proven evidence that memory is encoded in actual brain cells.

I'm out too. I'm sure I've overstayed my welcome and, in any case, this thread is somehow like 'heroin' for me. I'm sure it's just because I have no one to talk to. Sorry all - for being needy.

i'm at the point of ctb were i'm obsessed with death. holliday's only trigger me and this week i think i'll feel low enough to finally go though with it. i just hope there is no afterlife I just want to stop existing and be unconscious forever with no memories.
I'm convinced that reincarnation is real after doing a lot of research. I suggest you look into Dr. Ian Stevenson's work on factually verified past life memories. He has compiled thousands of them. Near death experiences are also very intriguing. You can look those up on nderf.org.

Nothingness. I believe our consciousness is in our brains, and when our brain is shut off (death), then there's no awareness.

Fear not - we are animals and nothing more. All the afterlife myths have been created by humans over time to take away our fear of death, or terrify us into living a certain way. If you have ever seen someone pass, or seen an animal die, it is the end. The bodily systems shut down, and that is that. No afterlife, no re-incarnation, no spirit heading upwards. Do not fear the afterlife. It doesn't exist.
I recommend reading the research of Dr. Ian Stevenson on factually verifiable past life memories around the world.

Theres only one way to know for sure, but once you cross that line there is no coming back.

Also unless there's an afterlife, we'll never know. Especially if it's eternal oblivion.

Since I'm an atheist, I believe that it is likely that it will just be like before I was ever born, nonexistence. No conscious, no feeling, just void and nothingness.

Reincarnation would suck monkey balls. Like being trapped in hell.
