The part that sucks is you have to pay property taxes on your house even if you paid it off. At least in the US.

I wish I could like this comment 5,000 times -- one for each dollar my father currently pays in annual property/school taxes on a modest $100,000 house in this suburban HELLHOLE that completely ruined my life! When he passes away, I'm not giving this town ONE RED CENT in taxes! My mother (who hasn't worked in over three decades) or my brother (who's 32 and has only worked three days in his entire life) will have to pay this stupid town or have the house seized. That's the most likely scenario that will drive me to finally CTB.

As for my employment situation, I no longer have the motivation or drive to work full-time like I did when I had a greater sense of hope, so I just work temporary or part-time assignments in order to fund my travels -- so I can afford to get the fuck out of this hellish environment a few times a year since no out-of-town employer wants to throw me a liferaft.

I worked as a hedge fund manager until I was fired because of my illness. Now I am living on my savings and ready to CTB.

Is this legal to do? Even in Japan?

I'm currently working at my dream job, more or less. I'm a part time library assistant. Ideally I'd be full time, for money and to occupy myself more, but this is fine. Before this I worked full time at a temp job, and before that full time at a restaurant. I've found being overworked helps me get through it — I fantasize about killing myself throughout the day and drink in the evening. I've been managing to get by for about eight months like that.

Made redundant at the end of last July, been living off savings.
  1. Cook/chef - 26 years
  2. Barman - couple of months
  3. Factory work - couple of months
  4. Postman - temporary
  5. Auxiliary nurse - 4 years
  6. Rockstar - 7 years
Maybe had one or two more dead end jobs that I can't remember at the moment.

I want to work so badly but I've been unemployed for about 2 years so most of my clothes are old/worn and I don't have the social skills from being isolated to go back into food service. I'm terrified of people these days, it's a living nightmare. I moved to Iceland on my own at 16 and over the years worked as a waitress at an Icelandic cafe, Pakistani restaurant, then assistant manager at a kebab shop. Worked in housekeeping for a year which I'd love to do again but there are no hotels or hostels nearby where I live now with my fiance.
He's in jail, and I hate relying on him fully, he deserves better. So I've got pretty much 0 options left besides leaving life behind and getting swallowed up by the streets. Too young to be accepted for disability even though by "mental illness" alone I qualify several times over. So yeah basically just wish I'd kept some of my savings to properly off myself with, now I don't even have the option of anything besides starvation/dehydration but I'm a shitty person so it's a fair way to go I think

Was supposed to try 1,4b but my last client (been freelance cleaning houses through CL a few times a month and it's kept me afloat but now I don't even have the $5 to renew my ad) scammed me so now I not only can't get the alcohol to make it more reliable but also owe someone with no way to remedy it. Basically, fuck everything

Anyway you're not alone OP

Pretty much subsist off social security due to disability. I will likely never work again. What I am now is a pointless shell surviving to survive. Simply because it is the default state of being alive and I have certain responsibilities I refuse to walk away from until I see them safe.

You should be able to get a SNAP card (food stamps—looks like a credit card). You only have to be unemployed if I'm remembering that correctly. I get almost $200/month for groceries.

For SSI, apparently your best bet is to hire a lawyer. They take a percentage of your back pay as payment (SSI money that you should've gotten in between the time you applied and when you were approved). That seems to make for a better case. I tried to get approved maybe 2 years ago, and I had seen the psychiatrist that they set me up with for an evaluation. He diagnosed me with like 5 different things, but I didn't get approved.

I've been told the system is: apply and get denied 2 times, then go to trial get get approved. When I applied this year, I got a lawyer, and I was approved the first time. I also have a physical disability now, so that might have played a large role in it.

This is really helpful, thank you

I applied for food stamps too, and was initially approved, but because I didn't make the meeting at the unemployment office (no bus money) and missed the phone meeting with my representative (she called like 3 hours late) ended up being denied. Guess I could try again but my phone goes out of service in 2 days so... Yeah, idk, it's worth a shot. Wouldn't really fix any of my internal problems but might be a start

So for the SSI, sorry if I sound like an idiot but don't you have to pay up front at first, or would you only have to pay them with a percentage of your SSI income if you get approved? My main problem is that I'm 21 and typically disability isn't granted for anyone under 30.

Yeah, if you miss any meetings or phone calls, you're out. The system is set up that way bc they want to be able to deny people.

No, you're not an idiot! This process is confusing af! No, I didn't have to pay my lawyer anything up front. He'll just get a percentage of my back pay (money I would've gotten between the time I applied and when I was approved). This seems to be the case for lawyers working on these types of cases, as I consulted with 2 other lawyers that did it the same way. I mean, I'm sure there's some swanky lawyers that make you pay upfront, but as far as I can tell that isn't the norm.

It's the same over here, it's not set up to support! It's set up to oppress.

That is absolutely fucked up. What are the chances that someone who seriously fuckin' NEEDS support to feed themselves has a working phone and ability to transport themselves anyway? I had to ask my abusive father to pay my phone bill last month and that 100% won't be happening again. Guess I can walk to/from the office, it's a few hours but not like I have anything better to do with my time.

And thanks for sharing! Doubt they'll consider a 21 year old for disability but who knows, there's a good chance I might be insane enough lol

Crikey! Having a flight dispatcher or a pilot on SS makes me thinking of that GermanWings Flight 9525 guy who had deliberately crashed his plane....

Wish there were not so many here struggling financially..... life is hard enough when you just want to die.

I'm thinking about all of this again, and what a cruel irony it is that some of us have to put ridiculous amounts of effort into living just to be able to ctb properly.
