Especially in more developed countries, where I assume whatever they use is quite humane. I'm just asking out of curiosity and not of any hope of acquiring these things to CTB.

Ethanol is an alcohol, the one that's in liquor. Are you by any chance thinking of Euthasol?Pentobarbital, the king of barbiturates.
There's also drugs such as "ethanol" which can provide a peaceful end but I'm not sure how much that's used any more.
