Lets discuss

Some questions to start, do you think the blue whale challenge is real or a hoax? Are challenges that assist in commiting suicide beneficial or not worth it?
Would you consider doing a challenge like this, and why?

For those of us who rarely/don't do social media, the what now? I assume this has nothing to do with eating plankton?

I recommend you check out the Wikipedia article for the blue whale challenge if you haven't already. From what I remember it originated as a videogame.
It also had some great songs:)

I think that blue whale definitely was a thing. Im sure if you look hard enough, it still is. But I do believe that the media REALLY ran with it.

I've had these thoughts too. In a way it would feel like you have a support system, someone to guide you though it. However sinister their intentions may be. And in a way, it could make it fun. Like a final scavenger hunt.

However, I would no longer consider this or something similar for many reasons. A few off the top of my head:
*CTB shouldn't be impulsive. It should be well thought out & done so relatively as safe as possible.
*Games like this 100% encourage people to CTB. Should this ever become a mainstream thing, hackers will absolutely coerce people into playing. Additionally, if someone is having thoughts (but still unsure) of CTB or start playing impulsively, there really is no way out. It becomes forced.
*I honestly believe the people behind this particular game have very ill intentions & it is probably dangerous to seek them.
* this particular game out other people's life and safety at risk.

These are all just my personal opinions on the subject. Nothing is backed by facts.

Back in the day there was a 'trend' going around in mental health forums where users would message someone to participate in a suicide challenge (the blue whale) they would join a group chat with multiple players , everyone was given tasks to complete within a certain amount of days like self harm, starving, isolation, talking with other players and taking pictures to verify when theyve completed the task. Mods would give out the tasks and players would have to do each one until the challenge was completed, the mod would then give them a schedule date for them to die, ok that day they were to commit suicide and they record as part of completing the game.

A suicide challenge basically, the tasks are supposed to psych you up to prepare you for when you take your life.

I can see why something like this would be beneficial, if you weren't sure you were ready to die participating in a challenge with others could be motivating.

My one issue is if a player decides to quit playing the game (doesnt want to die) their decisions would need to be respected. I dont condone peer pressuring people to die if they arent ready to commit , and within the game there was a big problem with players opting out getting hacked, stalked, harassed or having their information leaked, at that point its no longer a challenge it just becomes bullying

This is all true, and valid! There was debate whether the whole thing was a hoax or not but i remember hearing about the person who originally started it, they had sick intentions and went off to prison for it. The guy admitting doing it for fun.
Taking advantage of vulnerable people like that and getting off to it is really predatory!

But i suppose a challenge like this wouldnt always lead to a successful attempt, that would require careful planning wouldnt it?
These are things to consider...

I haven't heard about that since I was in middle school, that was a bit of a throwback to hear about. I'm sure it did kill people but I think it was all meant to be gross hoax.

Hoax or not, I'd enjoy if something like that existed. A group of people cheering eachother on to gradually nearing CTB would feel both less lonely and less daunting. Sort of like group-CBT. 😁

It's not a group of people cheering each other on. It's a few twisted men who coerce children to CTB.
The momo thing going around was another one some people might be more familiar with. It forced people to harm themselves, others, and ultimately lead to CTB. I do believe this one was for media attention. But it was derived from something real.

It was , yeah. I havent looked into the victims or the perpetrators ive only heard rumors. Imnot sure how young they were, i assumed it was a mix of teens or young adults.
I dont condone children so young commiting suicide (i feel it should be adult only decision, maybe this is hypocritical as i am an adult but the thought of kids dying so young feels morally gray, when you get older it becomes more black and white)
But I can not look past the whole predatory thing of it, convincing kids to kill themselves bullying them until they do then getting off to it, disgusting!

Group cbt, in a way isnt this forum low key kinda that? SS feels to me like a support group but not as formal the way a suicide challenge would be. People here have mentioned death challenges are more risky , i hadn't considered the careful planning behind it, my stance on this had changed seeing these other comments

I think we all want to die but not alone. Im glad something like SS is here.
Everyone is so chill, kind <3

That shit was so funny. People who believed in that have no idea how the deep web or the Internet works in general. The basic idea for the game itself could feasibly happen in reality, but this idea that if you stop doing tasks and stop hurting yourself, that the dude running the game is going to hunt you down and kill you himself? Yeah, no. You'd see that same type of crap all the time in creepypastas during the whole deep web/"red rooms" craze in the mid 2010s.

It was someone who CTB'd on their own for their own reason that got spun into a fun little hoax - but MAN I'd be upset if my CTB was attributed to a social media game, given my hatred of social media. I would Poltergeist the home and family of the jackoff who made lame horror content out of my CTB. If it's good horror content I'm all for it, but the Blue Whale challenge was garbage tier low effort creepypasta nonsense.
