Someone please tell me I'm not the only idiot who misunderstood this saying for YEARS. I always thought it was encouraging suicide because, I mean, why wouldn't I want a permanent solutions to all my problems? It's not until a few months ago that I found out it's supposed to be the opposite and I feel quite dumb, but still, how is a permanent solution bad, even if the problems are temporary?

Not if the problem itself is being alive. Then death is the only solution. The people who use that phrase never think about it that way.

I think that cliche applies to some people, but not everyone.

I read a post about a month ago where someone was going to CTB if they didn't pass a class at school. That is a temporary problem. Suicide is not the solution to that problem. Most people in here have more serious issues than being unable to pass a class.

I always understood it as an incentive not to ctb. But I think it is ridiculous. First, death is no solution. Death is only a scape because I have no alternative. Second, my problems are permanent. The only way to end them is with death.

It depends on the problem, If you want to CTB because your boyfriend/girfliend dumped you, then it's a permanent solution for something you won't mind in a few years, but there are situation where it is a permanent problem and you simply need to scape

It's always sad to see someone killing themselves over what most consider the most minor things or what most would consider temporary probles. But the truth is most of the time those minor things are just tip of the iceberg and probably just the thing that pushed them over the edge when no one noticed all the things that brought them to the edge.

I hate this quote with a passion - it's extremely condescending to be told this when my life is not a 'temporary' problem, it is an incessant mixture of trauma and severe depression. I get no break from it.

The other thing I hate hearing is 'It's Ok to not be Ok',

Sometimes this is true, but it is not that simple.

The fact that a problem is trivial for me does not mean that it is trivial for another person.
From such a person's perspective, this is not a trivial matter.
Pain is pain, no matter the reason.
It would be good if such people received any support, then most likely such a person will manage to survive this period and will realize in the future that CTB would be a gigantic stupidity because of this.

Of course, another thing is that someone may have many small problems that accumulate.
If one more problem arises in such a situation, the person may simply snap.

The system does not guarantee adequate mental support.
Children are often poorly raised by their parents.
People are not taught how to manage their emotions.
These things, among others, make the human psyche made of cardboard.

My thoughts exactly! Like- that's a good thing though- right? Who settles for quick fixes to a problem when there is a permanent solution?!!

What I think they really mean is- all problems are temporary- clearly not always true. All problems can be adequatly solved- also not true in some cases.

What's more- who gets to decide what kind of life we ought to feel satisfied with? Clearly, not us...

Of course, they'll then pull out their trump 'mental illness' card. Those who want to commit suicide aren't capable of making the decision because they have to be mentally ill- but- that's another argument.

A permanent solution to any kind of problems - what's so bad about it?

In real life a lot of problems are indeed temporary and we have the ability to adjust but there are also permanent problems of many kinds and maybe we don't want to adjust to them, hence a permanent solution is an option.

I understand and agree with the sentiment of this quote, i.e. trying to prevent CTB when the cause is a highly emotional but short-term and resolvable situation.
It just doesn't make much sense logically. Unless, of course, people actually tell each other to tape something together because they're afraid that actually fixing it would make it last permanently.

I knew that they said that phrase to try and make people not kill themselves but I personally have always interpreted this quote as it being a good thing for suicide. After all, a permanent solution is good, isn't it? The fact that death is a permanent solution makes me want to kill myself even more, not less. I don't understand how this quote can even dissuade anybody from killing themselves... like what exactly is their thought process here? Or maybe they aren't even thinking at all and just regurgitating this like an NPC because, for some reason, normies love to do that for famous quotes.

I agree though that people who want to end things over a failed relationship and things of that nature, especially early in life, might change their plans and views with more perspective.

Depends on the problem. If the problem is that you're going to ruin your family's lives, damage other people's reputations and also end up with nothing yourself which will be perpetual then it's a permanent solution to a persistent problem

If this is about venting i made a few weeks ago then i just wanna say that failing UNIVERSITY is far from the only reason i want to CBT. And i think its the true to most people, its usually not the one reason but accumulation of suffering and misery in the whole life, and sometimes it is the unbearable situation one found themself in (Like debts, or uncurable ilness that cause immense suffering). I also made myself clear that i acknowledge that most people here is in more miserable situation than me.

For me failing three years of degree (not school, its like huge difference) is kinda the final crack in my life. But yea, i understand if this would be only this that it would be kinda weird to CBT cause of this. But again, there is much more to that

Yeah, the phrase is a little silly, if the intent is to dissuade against suicide. Why would you want a temporary solution, even if the problem is temporary?
