Is Sodium Nitrate, not nitrite, effective at all? I brought a pack from Amazon not knowing it's different from Nitrite.
Does it do anything?

Probably really bad diarrhoea and possibly colon cancer in the future. It's not effective or painless, it's not safe to consume either it would just be a bad idea and more likely to make you feel like shit than anything. I tried to google the updated answer just now, but google redirects to articles about sodium nitrite consumption instead. There's even some that are titled sodium nitrate / sodium nitrite, but they are different.

I did see a case online where a man accidentally consumed too much sodium nitrate- presumably some mistake in home meat curing. He was admitted to hospital and was extremely ill. Can't quite remember all the details to be honest. I think he may have died because I remember the article saying that some of the nitrate had become nitrite in the man's stomach. Poor guy.

Bear in mind I'm going from memory here but I find it curious that it seems to alternate between nitrate to nitrite in the stomach- and the reverse if I'm not mistaken. Wasn't the consumption of an antacicid to stop the nitrite turning into nitrate? I just don't get it. Maybe I'm mistaken. Hopefully, some brainy person will be able to advise

Anyway- as far as I'm aware- I don't think nitrate is as lethally potent as nitrite- so it's definitely not something worth the risk to my mind.
