So what are the "robots" for?

When I look at which people are online I usually see 10-20 "robots", what use do they serve?

They're referred to as "web crawlers" or "spiders" they index pages for Google, that's how Google displays search results, and caches pages.

My big fear with robots is at the core of this question ("What are robots for?"). If AI-endowed robots ever evolve (or are programmed with) feelings, yet another being capable of suffering will have been created. And if it's one thing humans know how to do very, very well, besides reproduce, it's cause other sensitive beings to suffer.

I already feel bad in advance for the poor sentient robots being used as sex machines. Because humans are obsessed with sex and apparently can't evolve enough to get past this obsession.
