For those who draw, do you have a reference to go by- or do you draw without one?

I usually always draw with a reference. Though sometimes I just get bored and do stuff with lines.

Haven't painted in maybe 5mos (feels like an eternity to me) but here's one of the last things I worked on.

(Edited because I'm paranoid, I thought I hadn't posed this elsewhere but apparently did lmao. Still love lurking this thread, though.)

I drew this lovely bitch just now, in the art room at a psych ward. My worst fears about my future self lmfao.

Experimenting with 4-in-1 ballpoint pen... or as I'd call RGB pen. I dunno about these. Being that it's green instead of yellow, the skin looks "raw".

What is pfp?
Hey is there any improvement in my art.
Please critique my work master.

Pfp is an acronym for Profile Picture. Took me a while to figure that too.

I'd say there's some. I like the face of that mask woman. The hog is good, but I suggest practicing with the shading. Crosshatching. And keep layering at angles until theres depth. Also remember the gesture mannequin technique... or better yet, when doing portraits, collarbone method, since the proportions could still use some work, like the woman's shoulder placement as well as the hog boss'.

Notice the faint lines that go from shoulder to shoulder and the boxes for the body.

Jeez dude, I bet you would have a good time with another program besides MS paint. But I guess it goes with your improviser tagline.

Thank you master. The shoulder bothers me a lot. I'll heed your wisdom. :sunglasses:

Why is it so ugly?
I'm tryin tryin and tryin just can't make it look decent, it looks dead. What with modern art nowadays, their piece are weird and borderline ugly but people love em. Shading so hard. Detailing so hard. Learn online still got no results arghhhhh. I wanna give up but my mind tell me not to stop. Any tips to stop art forever? It's annoying.

Don't give up. You just need technique. About shading, if you have a resource image, you could posterize it and shade accordingly. Like this.

It also helps to make a grid to make it accurate.

Also yeah, I'm not crazy about modern art either, kinda vexes me on how things that look like something even a child could do be praised vs something that takes great effort and patience.

but I don't mind someone bullying me into eating brownies.
Hehe, well to be honest, I do tend to eat a lot more brownies than I should...

This is a work in progress. We got some frames in the mail for my SO's art that's going in a gallery at his school and I decided to paint on the cardboard. This is a bit more of a vent piece than I usually do. It feels nice to work with acrylics and use a limited palette and just go ham on such a cheap surface.
This is a depiction of the constantly guilty child that lives in my heart and potentially your own. Be nice to him. He's still learning right from wrong and no one is offering him guidance, only punishment and passive aggression.
I plan on rendering him more - especially the eyes. And then adding a black sludge that drips down his cheeks like tears and covers his palms like blood.

ope. SO stands for significant other! In this case, my fiancé. He's finishing up his senior year for a BA in graphic design in December and then going to grad school for illustration.

Also thanks! I promise I'm only up my own ass about 30% of the time. I usually just draw characters in a simple style. This is a more finished digital piece, but most of my stuff is just scribbles in my sketchbook tbh.

Thanks man! I really enjoy the stuff you've posted in this thread. I wish I could give you a tablet and a copy of Clip Studio Paint and see what you make! Your MS Paint stuff is awesome. If you're on instagram, I suggest checking out @blakeobk! You guys seem to share artistic influences.

Sure thing and thanks!
I used to have a tablet before my pen broke... but at this point, I find that I draw 10X better with a mouse. Clip studio is something I can consider giving a whirl.
Thanks for the instagram, link, I'll check him out!
