sorry if this is disgusting, but this is the only place I can vent...
I have severe constipation and the doctors are not helping me... I read Elvis Presley died because of it. My rectum is basically stuck and there is nothing I can do about it myself. I can't walk, I can't eat.. nothing... I hate the doctors for treating me like this.... "Just constipation, go home, take this". I've already taken everything, orally and rectally, now they give me even more powerful medicine. For what? All the resource online say that if basic treatments don't work, the doctor must do some sort of manual extraction, because this can lead to death. Why didn't they do it for me? I'm a foreigner, are they discriminating?
Tomorrow I have an appointment at a private clinic. I might have to give away all my savings. But I must fix this. I don't mind death. But I do mind a painful death.
..... Take care of your health, fellow suicidal brothers and sisters.. One of the main causes of constipation is depression, so we are at high risk of it. Just try to exercise, eat fiber and drink water...
.............................................. I just wish someone would shoot me. I wish I was never born............... A life of struggles...............

So sorry about this. I had this quite badly after a surgery though it's better now, for a while I was on more laxatives than food!

Have you tried- peristeen irrigation, 4 plus sachets of movicol, celevac fibre? You might have to look up local names for that stuff.

@suffering, you should be able to get the manual procedure done at an emergency room. Have you tried that? Or tried giving yourself an enema?

they gave me an enema and it didn't work... I begged them to let me stay there, but they sent me home. I will ask for the manual procedure tomorrow at the private clinic :( Any idea if it hurts?

I have IBS too as @Close_to_freedom stated above...not sure if it's the same condition as it is for @suffering..(?:)..but as for me, I admit, Some of my problem is I drink alcohol to cope. Alcohol dehydrates and depletes magnesium levels; which is why it was common to serve peanuts/ bar-nuts at bars, to replace an alcoholic's magnesium levels....But even when I didn't drink, I still had ibs issues. I also think the modern diet in general that I grew up with, didnt't help...Now, I do take suppliment Magnesium daily with a lot of water, and I had to eliminate certain foods from my diet.... The magnesium I take for muscle relaxation; it also helps the involuntary muscles of the digestive tract relax......As the OP said, and I agree, and I also feel that my depression was a good-sized catalyst which lead to my IBS digestive issues....

Diarrhea is the worst part of ibs.
C and D-both have their set-backs. Personally, I have went from one extreme to the other with IBS. But the elimination diet and magnesium has controlled it at this point...but I do feel like throwing up, nauseous -GERD daily....it comes and goes...that is my recent thing...

It used to be practiced in 'healthcare facilities' before the invention of drugs like Senna- drugs to encourage bowel movements; but people used to "roll their bowels.' What that means is, ontop of water drinking, a person would get a 'deep massages' on their intestinal tract regions. The internet could school somebody better as to how to do it.......but I used to lean over chairs, and/ or self-massage- with my thumbs, a chef's rolling pin-( ironically, one of several things I had to eliminate was breads, beer, red meats, processed pastas etc..., personally)- my intestinal area of my belly region, to encourage the movement of 'trapped materials.'

I've never been diagnosed with anything but I have constant bowel/bladder pain and always suffered extreme constipation too. It is the worst thing to have to deal with so I know how you feel.

This has happened to me. Three or four weeks without a bowel movement. I know the pain. I was dying and I got kicked out of hospital and told I was fine it was just depression.
I bullied an out of hours gp into prescribing me Laxido (aka Movical, Miralax, polyethylglycol). You can take this as an acute dose of up to 8 satchets to shift an impaction. The effects will happen after a few hours or overnight and will be violent and constant.
You can also take it as a chronic dose of 1 to 3 satchets a day to manage the condition.
It works by drawing more water into the bowel to soften the stool an promote peristalsis or by inducing diarrhea as an acute dose.
Other laxatives may or may not be helpful but don't tend to work in the long term. I have experience with those too as I've been suffering from defecation disorder for four years and functional constipation too for the last year.
Good luck know how horrible this is and how it hurts. Also how the doctors just dismiss it.

Thank you so much for the validation, I really needed this. I got recommended some strong laxatives and I was told that it is going to be very uncomfortable. I know I will sound like a weak coward (I am), but I am afraid to take them alone. I hope the private clinic allows me to check in for the night so I can have a nurse help me through. I am so afraid....
edit: hoping they can sedate me too

It's unpleasant for sure but not really that bad. It's better then being clogged up. Just expect to stay near the toilet all night and have some explosive action! If you take Movicol you can stay on a high dose for a few days ( though I stayed on it for longer, I had no choice) then revert to a lower dose. You can up or down the dose as required depending how you feel.
The medication you take for this is very dependent on the type of constipation and what may be causing it. Some may long term need more fibre in the diet, plus more exercise and water. Some may need to alleviate anxiety. Some may have opiod or medication induced constipation and need to stay on medication. There are also chronic illnesses and more serious causes that may need investigation.
But what you need right now is to get out of the mess you are in, so that will probably be something like movicol to get stuff moving hopefully.
When I started taking it at that high dose I just gave up on sleep and lived in the toilet for a long time.
Also, you must stay hydrated on this medication and you must continue to eat. I stopped eating because of the constipation and that's the worst thing you can do. Your bowel needs waste in it to be able to work. No waste, no work.

I though about spirulina, but i read online that because it has iron, it can make constipation worse :(

In my experience it works quite well without giving diaherra. Spinach contains lots of iron too but that also is very laxative.

Spinach hasn't had much effect on me, used to eat lots of it. Apparently, contrary to popular belief, spinach actually inhibits iron absorption unless it's cooked with an acid like lemon juice, in which case it's iron is well absorbed. Not sure how true that is, but I heard it from a good source.
Kale on the other hand seems to be having a positive effect, I think. My issues are so weird it's hard to tell.

Worth keeping I mind that normal laxatives may not help an impaction if you haven't been for a few days or a week or so. That's where a pre op bowel prep or polyethylglycol can help flush the impaction out. If you are heavily impacted, a traditiona stimulantl laxative may just cause griping pain and overflow diarrhea.

Use a water bottle to flush out your rectum.

Fill a bottle up with water. Place it where it needs to be and squeeze it. Seconds later go to the loo and evacuate. Repeated several times

Have you tried silicol gel? You can buy it over the counter. Years of anti depressants and constipation have given me a rectal prolapse. Totally horrendous to live with, so I do empathise with what you are going through. Sounds simple but drink lots of water to try and keep things moving. Fibre is a bit trial and error, sometimes it can bung you up and other times the opposite. Movicol is a necessary evil, horrendous bloating and wind. Dulcolax is good in emergencies, but not too often as it makes the bowel sluggish. Senna gives me a lot of pain. Some days I question whether eating anything is worth the hassle, at the other end!!

Similar situation as the OP once upon a time. Couldn't sleep, couldn't even sit for long periods of time after a week or so of no bowel movements. (I think my record was 12 days.) Only thing that ever worked for me was saline enemas. Messy, and more than a little gross, but got the job done. Sticking a plastic tube up the ol' pooper does highlight the absurdity of life, so there this that. And after that long of not "going," what emerged was absolutely terrifying in terms of volume.

Suppository style enemas and stool softeners did jack shit (in a metaphorical sense only, sadly), never mind advice about "eating more fiber" or "drinking more water." Complaining to both the shrink and the therapist was useless, both blew me off, of course.

This is back when I was on two different anti-depressants, two ADHD meds, one tranquilizer (to offset the jaw grinding caused by Adderall) an experimental drug for Autism in a controlled study, plus a thyroid medicine. When I lost my health insurance I lost access to all of this. After a rather spectacular withdrawal period my poops mostly went back to normal. I can honestly say losing my health insurance made my life better, go figure.

I've been there and no doubt there are plenty of people who will make some crass joke about it given half a chance. The cause in my case was a mix of quetiapine and procycladine. Both reduce the body's production of mucosa so bodily functions grind to a halt and it can be horrible. I will spare you all the gorey details but I'm pretty sure my insides got pretty badly damaged. It also felt like I was passing jello when I urinated. Best to seek help from those qualified I suppose, however sadly it seems that some people have been ignored. I reported my experience to the psych who just smirked in response. I ditched half the meds he was prescribing me after that and things improved. Not that I would recommend that anyone else do the same without consulting their doctor. In my case it was clear my concerns were falling on deaf and indifferent ears.
