I remember when I was still growing up I thought that recoiling from the world as a coping strategy was the greatest evil and the saddest failure for a human being. But that is what I was pushed toward due to a combination of genes and environment (mostly just bad parents) and that is exactly the tragic outcome I have been "living" for years. For my entire adult life actually.
Is having to withdraw instead of confronting reality and seeking truth the most pathetic form of existence for a human? I think it is. Everyone has to collude with certain lies to manage so I guess it's also a question of degree but having to do it even just a little bit is already sad. I'm sure some people never have to.
