Is happiness independent or just "post-pain relief"?

  • It's an independent state.

  • It's just relief from pain.

  • It depends

It's been a long time since I've felt genuine happiness or contentment, so I tend to see happiness as just a state that comes after some level of pain has eased. I'm a bit confused and wonder what others think.

I felt so happy after a problem I was dealing with for years ended. I went back to feeling a bit sad but not as sad as I was before.

I think it can be an independent state. I think we can go from being in a more neutral state to feeling positive emotions about something. But then- it can also appear as a relief to something bad ending too. As I've experienced it anyway.

My experience suggests it is an independent state that is commingled with a relief aspect. I can point to times when I've been objectively happy without being relieved from "something".

No, never, I don't believe in the idea of happiness in existing, to me existing will always just be dreadful, unnecessary torture and suffering, existence only ever causes pain and torture, there is nothing happy about any of this.

I don't see what could be happy about existing beings tortured every second as a result of this dreadful, harmful existence where there is no limit as to how much agony one can feel, there's just so much evil in existing, to me existence will always just be the most terrible, dreadful and harmful mistake that should never be imposed.
