  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

Why is it considered to be a correct hanging when the neck is broken, but the head does not come off? It is clear that such remains take longer to remove, but is there any difference in the sensations for the hanged person in these two outcomes? And if not, then why not always fall from the maximum height, so as not to accidentally have to suffer from asphyxia, which, to put it mildly, is not very pleasant? I do not understand at all why people so often choose death by asphyxia, when there is practically the same option, but faster and less painful.

Long drop is the best they say. The neck is broken causing instant death, but it needs to be broken in a "sweet spot" according to what I have read. Its also difficult Id say having looked into it a bit, but people do pull it off. The other forms cause death by strangulation.

Ill say because for hundreds, if not thousands of years long drop was the official form of execution. Having the head attached was the mark of a good execution. So that follows all the available data today. There have also been Drs who worked on this in the day who worked to relieve the pain of the person to be executed. Governments have strove for humane executions for some time now. Long rambling answer, but there you go.

I am guessing the decapitation issue is more for people watching and cleanup rather than the person being hanged.
What does "head separation" mean in this context?
If the person falls too far, they can build up enough force that their head just pops off their neck. You end with a head in a noose and a bloody body on the floor.

My guess is that it's about the mess you make. You have to clean it up but also it can be considered less dignified way.

It's easier and you can be more sure that the rope and anchor will not break.

That's what I imagined lol. I wouldn't have thought it would actually be a consideration in homebrew setups.

And if the rope breaks, is there a chance that the neck will still break from the sudden load?
Think about it. If you try to do a long drop with the thinest rope you've seen you won't even notice it. On the other hand if the rope is almost thick enough it will likely break your neck.

It really depends on the thickness of the rope, material of the rope, height, your weight,....

Are the options long drop or failure?
The reality of reasonable hanging options are not included on this list.
Other is the most appropriate answer.

What do you mean? I am asking about the most painless and quickest way to hang, regardless of the method, because I noticed that many people like the suffocation option, although I find it quite cruel

Suffocation is part of a botched hanging, not a successful one.
Yes, both kill you, but one knocks you out quickly. It kills by interrupting blood flow to the brain, not by blocking your airway.
