It gives them the illusion they could make it too. It motivates them to keep engaged in the rat race. Look at social media, look at traditional media stories. It reinforces an incentive structure of a gambling economy. You could become a billionaire too. It fades out the reality that most wealth is inherited. And that only a very small minority achieves positive forms of social mobility. And you have to be extremely talented, gifted and have a lot of luck to make it.
Whereas people like to look down on us. Blame us for societal ills. We are the peasants they can shit on. And even a place where we can support each other gets shit on. It is too uncomfortable to admit that there are losers of life. People who didn't make it. It is easier to fade that out and live in a fairy tale world.
I read a yellow press news story where someone posted a Youtube video explaining how bad looking the person perceived himself. And oh wonder he met the love of his life from a different country. Now years later they are married, moved together and have children. Well this isn't how the story usually goes. Nowadays, if you post such a video you are often a target of bullying and harrassment. In most cases I wouldn't advice to post a video about your insecurities. This will attract a lot of bad apples with a lot of hatred.
