Love this, agree with your thoughts.

You didn't mention religion..most religions endorse the fundamental value of life. Personally I believe that grows out of the evolutionary origin you mentioned.

As to taxes...as an older member, I've often thought that a great way to save money on social programs would be to offer those over 62 an assisted suicide option. So many savings in social security and in health care. Longevity is a serious budget drain on individuals and on governments. Letting us elders check out would be a win-win!
As a counterpoint to that, I don't think the government would want assisted suicide to be readily accessible to seniors because the older people get, the more health problems they have and the more they feed big pharma and healthcare. Older people have increased needs in terms of medical care, operations, medications, etc.

I believe suicide prevention efforts are mostly well-intended. Unfortunately, addressing the societal issues that contribute don't seem to be part of those efforts, at least at a meaningful level.

That only works if people can pay for those treatments; even if they're on insurance, depending on treatment cost insurance companies don't love shelling out massive quantities indefinitely. Some shit they straight up don't cover.

You absolutely do not have to have a great life or be happy to be alive to be pro-life
i think most probably yourself, along with myself and possibly many others just want everyone to be as happy, as content and as comfortable as possible. to me, that isn't really pro-life. i doubt any of us on this site want anyone to take their own life, but we understand if they choose to do it. my opinion is that you cannot save someone from taking their own life, you can only delay the inevitable. one of the few exceptions, if not the only exception to this, is when someone like yourself was there for them, and making them feel wanted, cared for and appreciated in a dark time

I have been told by people I worked with during that time that I'm the only reason they're still alive (and no, they weren't upset with me for helping them survive, they were grateful).
you were almost certainly caring about them and their situation, so it is easy to be grateful to someone who deserves appreciation. anger, when it comes to this subject, is usually directed towards those who are just virtual signalling, not those who genuinely care about the person

to be pro-life
i guess the word i was looking for when replying to you before was "pro-caring"

the world would be a much better place if everyone was pro-caring as opposed to pro-life. if that was the case, almost certainly there would be less people looking to end their lives as well, so pro-lifers would be redundant

@_Gollum_ I agree with your premise and I think that is the most baseline and basic line of reasoning that most people have. To add to it, I think the reason the State (the government) gets involved is due to revenue, taxes, and work (labor), then of course that is veiled and also partly influenced by the populace. The current populace (even as of the writing of this post) still has a view of life above all else and death to be avoided as much as possible, which in turn, influences policy and then government ends up enforcing said policy. It sucks, and I wished the government would keep it's paternalistic hands out of citizens' day to day lives and bodily autonomy, but until the populace's view on life and death changes, sadly the general populace influences government policy, which also in turn regulates and affects the populace... like a feedback loop.
