I know this has already been rejected by the op, but I just wanted to point out this isn't a viable method for most people these days anyway. Catalytic converters kinda put a kink in things.

It's going to be difficult to near impossible to remain anonymous, I'm afraid. I think the best chance would be to somehow get out of your country and "lose" all identification.

But if it helps, you aren't likely to make any major headlines. It's just not newsworthy unless you take yourself out in some spectacular fashion, use a very unusual method, or hurt anyone else.

Oh, and as far as getting that check to your relative, it's probably easiest to mail it? Registered mail with signature should be fine.

People have such short attention spans these days that there may be some chatter for a day but the next day they will be back to posting cute photos of kittens on Instagram. And as you said, who really gives a shit. Have you thought of leaving the city and getting a motel room somewhere more peaceful? Personally I'm going to go on a camping trip or rent a hotel room.
