new to steam, any free visual novel recommendations?

i've had this laptop that runs windows now and want to work up the courage to use it more often. before this i used to play whatever browser based games i could on itchio. does anyone have visual novel recs for steam?

Doki Doki literature club. It's free and very nice. Dont look up anything about it before you play it to make sure you get the best possible experience.

aside from that, phoenix wright and danganronpa are also very nice.

hate to break it to you but i watched nearly the entire walkthroughs for those VNs lol. i'll still definitely check out DDLC since i've always wanted to play the game, didn't know it was free tho!

DDLC has a pretty big modding scene so there's a lot of fanmade mods that try to expand upon the characters and stuff, I recommend looking into that afterwards
I will say even if you already know the story you can always re-experience it, people re-read books all the time, and they are visual "novels" so

You might be able to download paid Steam games through steamrip, I have seen reviews on it here and then, and have used it myself, I believe it is safe. Basically, the site will give you the zip files of the game then you can unzip it and run the application.

it's strongly advised that if you do get it on steam (it's free) you install the NSFW patch. while the H scenes may not be 100% necessary, they do contribute strongly to the story.

r/piracy has a sizeable megathread dedicated to trustworthy sources for the distribution of digital media.
if you didn't purchase said media you COULD totally use those sites for free and engage in the act of piracy

Seconding Scarlet Hollow, but I also want to recommend Slay The Princess, which is a Taoist horror love story. Both are made by Black Tabby Games; I don't even like visual novels, but I love Scarlet Hollow and Slay The Princess.

Most of games I wanted to include were already mentioned here... What comes to mind is Everlasting Summer. Community is quite active. Had Reflexia prototype in my library, it's also good. There're a lot of indie horror VNs like Saihate Station too. I didn't play it, but you could check out Cinderella Phenomenon, the reviews are positive
