  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I always see people use pro-choice or pro-life but that gets confusing with abortion instead of suicide so I thought of new terms that would make things clear.

Pro Existence (for those who want other people to live always)
Choice Existence (for those who want a choice in whether they or others live or die)

Tell me what you think about these new terms!

I think it's fine as is. Context is usually the key part of the definition so as long as the context is clear, it's not really confusing.

I've got no issue with the terms because they are suprisingly accurate in this context too.

Do adults have authoritive and rights over their bodies or not?

Anti-choice instead of "pro"-life, because that's what they are. They're against choice, against autonomy. Maybe "Anti-Autonomy". Maybe just call them Fascists.

"Pro-choice" is fine with me for the other side, the sensible side, our side. Maybe "Pro-Autonomy".

I think most people know what we're refering to here and, I doubt so many of us freely talk about suicide outside of here. I also think there are a lot of antii-natalists so I imagine only the minority here would be against abortion. I could be wrong there of course.

I don't mind anti- choice as opposed to pro- life as- that is what it boils down to. Preventing people from making their own choice.

I also think 'pro- life' fits in with their (debatable) delusions that all suicidal people can in fact LIVE rather than simply exist. I doubt someone in chronic pain would call it 'living'- more like existing against their will. To me, 'pro- existence' is too close a truth that pro- lifers are trying to avoid. That some people do indeed only exist. Their life is possibly too far gone and irredeemable to call it life. If they actually acknowledged that they were only prolonguing a painful existence, they may actually reconsider their viewpoint.

In the womens rights discussion, pro-choice is just that, they get to choose.
In the pro-life discussion, there is no choice, just life at any cost.
Pro-life is as misguided in womans health as it is in bus catching.
I think the terms fit as is. Changing them might be more confusing.

I am pro-life, I don't agree with some of the above as true pro-life isn't what is being naively said here. I'm sure there are those on either side that have their extreme and brash views but it's simply that there is sanctity in all life, all life has value..

And yes, I know I am here, but we each have our own struggles, and we find places where we can get community and help.

I recognise it's incredibly difficult when there's so much pain and agony to be had at times or consistently psychologically and physically. The struggle to live is an incredibly difficult one..

Take care

Thank you. There is pro-life as a belief and pro-life as an agenda. You must be the first. No offense intended.

why is it someone else's business if i want to leave this hell called life? of course anyone should have the choice if they want to continue living or exit life now or today or anyday.

we all will die anyway. but they have taken away the choice if you need to or want to leave when you want to. they passed laws to make someone helping you to commit suicide so they made it extremely difficult when it was guaranteed before they passed those laws. you have to do it in secret by yourself , defeat si, and with a method that is not guaranteed. they also made nembutal and suicide booths a crime.

i couldn't care less what some other human does or doesn't do as long as they don't affect me.

they turned this world into an anti-choice prison world . i guess they have most humans fooled into being anti-choice. for example they have most humans believing the lie that you have to be mentally ill to commit suicide. so people don't know that anyone can fall into a trap of extreme suffering and how bad that torture can be. so they see someone wanting to commit suicide and think "that person must be mentally ill" instead of the truth that the suicidal person is suffering extremely and is not mentally ill but only wants to move away from suffering so bad that they are looking to kill themselves. this one small aspect of and i could write a book about it but i haven't seen it anywhere.

even if you are suffering extreme torture you can't escape the torture but have to keep suffering

After just two hours, it looks like everyone agrees with the original terms, and I'm really glad I made this post. I was initially very nervous about sharing my thoughts, but even when I encountered disagreements to my own idea, I felt okay and that has boosted my confidence. Thanks so much to everyone who voted!

Trapped in this Suffering

I feel like a better term for them is anti-suicide. They are against suicide at all times which is terrible to me as I don't see suicide or death as a bad thing at all as that ends suffering but life always has the potential to cause more suffering than positive feelings. They are blind to the more important thing here and that is allowing people to end their pain with whatever way they see fit as long as its moral. We are pro-choice as we allow that option to be taken.

Calling one side "pro-life" is a masterful sleight of hand in the context of abortion, because it subtly implies that the opposing is a death cult. I don't think it's terribly egregious in the context of debating suicide, but I'd rather we just dispense with the euphemisms and call the sides "pro-choice" and "anti-suicide".
