  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I got a N2 tank about 2 months ago, at first I did not want to store a gas tank at my place, because of all the horrible stories that goes around of how unsafe it is. But we have been living together in harmony for a while now. I also got a click flow regulator from es... feel a bit worried to test it, again, this because of people saying the tank can explode in your face, go through the ceiling etc. So I thought, why not wait then until the day of reckoning? why take the risk now? Yet I want to see if it works? If you go super slow, would it minimize the risk of an explosion?
.
Another question, how many times can you turn a cylinder's valve?

It is a 10L tank of nitrogen 5 , about 1600 L in gas volume. Why is dr Nitschke cylinders so small compared to my tank? how many liters is it? it seems inadequate?

Was quite expensive to get everything in place. Bought a wrench, which was the last piece of equipment that I needed to purchase

You're not getting an explosion with nitrogen without doing something stupid to the cylinder. I suppose it could go through your ceiling if you smashed the valve off the top of it. I'm pretty sure it's not flammable either so it's pretty safe.

@luten i think you're confusing explosion and rupture. An explosion needs fuel and a source of ignition. n2 is inert - it can't explode. However, under the extreme pressures involved, ruptures can happen. These turn the significant amount of potential energy into kinetic energy (ie. things start moving, fast).

I wouldn't worry too much. Failures usually happen when the tank is filled. If it still is holding its full pressure, there are no structural or mechanical issues to worry about.

@threesummers thank you for your reply, and reassurance. I guess such problems can also occur when one modify a regulator. I am not going to do that....

Maybe Nitschke shows the 2l tank which is the absolute minimum - 27 minutes of gas flow

I have heard members here talk of devices that protect the valve. I wish I had paid better attention when they did. Like you I'm concerned about this issue. I worry about the nitrogen tank turning into a missile too.

There are tanks with a so called cage at the valve. it protects the valve and is a carrying handle.

Holy shit these are industrial cylinders used every....single....day in hundreds of thousands or millions of welding shops, chemistry labs, manufacturing facilities, etc.

These are not death traps waiting to explode at the slightest provocation. Don't drop it and don't hit the valve. It's really simple.

mine has one, i never knew this was for protecting the valve, i thought it was only a handle., i see now that if it falls over the valve wont bump against anything as for the handle protection.

that is hectic. must be 2L, have seen old people holding it up against their chests on some of his videos.
