It's possible to survive, sadly. Lots of people shoot under the chin or at the temple and end up debilitated and disfigured for years.

By him/her considering "shooting themselves in the head" which in the UK would take over a thousand (for a license and a gun). If I was living in a 3rd world country and didn't have that much - and I am - I wouldn't be thinking about it because I can't afford it. He or she can afford the method, and can afford to read up on N since it's a little more expensive than a gun, but a lot more peaceful for example.

Absolutely. I am an european so what do I know about guns, but all those assertions of .22 LR being used as the standart contract/ serial killer's choice seems inappropriate. If anything, they are by defiition excellent marksmen with steady hands and a nerve.

Shotgun has the most reasonable laws of obtaining on average, across countries - be it in Vietnam, Pittsburgh or the North Pole you need a shotgun license alone.
It costs less than a powerful pistol, ammo is common and can be found easily because most of it is standartised at 12 gauge - what one is most likely to get anyway, by just showing their license.
As a downside, separate storage cabinets are necessary but annoying as an additional cost. No way around it I guess.

While understandable that it's something on your mind, I don't think it is possible for you to get a meaningful answer. People who profess to know anything about how painful it would be yet have not experienced it themselves are just expressing their opinion based on well, nothing.

What I can tell you first hand is that pulling the trigger is a major SI roadblock unless you have nerves of steel. Sure, it sounds easy until you're there. Then not so much. If you are worried about it before you're even there in that moment, I advise you to consider other alternatives.

This is probably a Euro/UK thing. It's different in the USA. While in liberal areas---like my state that almost made me CTB---even the word "weapon" scares people, in many other parts of the USA, owning a firearm, whether a pistol or a hunting rifle, is as normal as owning a car. Especially considering that most places other than New York City are almost impossible to live in without driving.
