They say Obama made Trump possible. They say if Hillary didn't rig it against Sanders history could have been different.
In my country they say Angela Merkel and her actions during the refugee crisis gave rise to the AfD.

But why is the far-right so powerful in so many Western countries if the reasons are related to certain individuals?

Isn't the rise of the far-right a symptom of the decline of Western hegemony in the world? Economically we have stagnation (and inflation). Other countries are on the rise while we are losing power relatively speaking. One could say the left has failed by not delivering for the working class. And this is why workers are now voting for the far-right. But I get the feeling this is more a systemic question and not dependent on single politicians. Obama did not deliver. Biden tried to be more brave economically but it wasn't rewarded either.

I won't go into details more. I have more questions than answers but I will end it with Marx: "History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce"

The established parties have been moving too fast without letting the voter base catch up.
People are still concerned about the immigration waves, trying to recover from covid policies, adapt to the green transition, etc, but are told to make way and eat the costs of the next new thing.

The new right tend to cater to the immediate needs of the voters (populism). As the establishment is running further and further ahead of the voters, it's quite natural that the right get increasing support. I think people are trying to be good and do the right thing, but are feeling defeated - being pushed harder and harder to push their own wellbeing aside, in favor of things they might not even be convinced of.
I think that's the systemic issue you're missing.

I don't think there's any historical equivalent.

Yep, we swung too far to the left. Now we're getting an over correction to the right. Western politics and economics are a mess right now…

The first sentence is kinda true IMO. Obama roasted the living daylights out of Trump at that one WHC dinner and the look on Trumps face said it all. I think that was the beginning of Trump and whatever vendetta he had against Obama for that night lol

I believe it is a periodic thing that changes over time because human beings are always looking for something new.
