Beyond missing the basics like shelter, food, and basic safety ...etc.
It doesn't sound like it's a mediocre life that is your issue. Plenty of people with "exciting" or "exceptional" lives still thrill seek, become addicts, become chronically ungrateful and out of touch (some would say spoiled kid syndrome) have chronically unhappy relationships with others, and even kill themselves.

It's how I live, not how long I live.

I suppose a mediocre life to me is one where I am existing rather than living and that to me will be unacceptable. Ever since my mid teenage years I have witnessed freinds and loved ones suffer unfair pain, illness and loss of dignity. Back then I decided that I would own the time and manner of my death, initially it was to happen aged 30, but life got in the way, a good life. Now as I am pushing 70 that mediocre life is galloping towards me and I have chosen death, soon.
