I can understand why the moderators of the site would want this. This is the easiest way to ensure that people don't create alt accounts just to troll (or worse) without requiring literal KYC, which most people wouldn't agree to anyway. Plus, it may make people more hesitant to do harm to others, knowing that the mods can give their info to authorities at any moment.
Still, if people knew what a bad actor can do with this information, they probably wouldn't want to share it at all.
I don't know anything about the lore of this forum, so forgive me if it's offensive to even consider this possibility, but.. what if one of the mods is a bad actor? If they have the technical knowledge to connect a person's ip to their identity, they can easily manipulate or blackmail people into doing terrible things. They can also obviously do this anonymously, so the rest of the mods wouldn't be able to know who's to ban. Even if they could, though, that mod could have already stored all the ips by that point anyway.
Even if all people with access to that info are decent enough not to do something like this, nobody is completely safe from data breaches. If those ips were leaked, who knows what might happen to the members?
I won't go into specifics here, but I would also like to point out that you don't really need to reveal your real ip when creating an account here, so a determined person could still create a bunch of alt accounts if they wanted to while remaining fully anonymous.
I know this is a very difficult problem to solve, so no hate to the moderators whatsoever, but maybe you could look into some alternative solutions? Maybe something like WorldID or Idemix?

I think it is written in the rules that you have to use your own IP to create an account. I am not Fully sure. But it seems logical. It is the only way to hold someone accountable. Name me any forum on the clearnet that doesn't require revealing your real IP when registering. I could imagine it is the only way to cooperate with the authorities if someone on here commit a serious crime. And stuff like that happened on here already.

I totally understand. It's ridiculous how much it takes for a person to stay anonymous on the internet. We already have so many things in life that demand our attention, so it's no wonder that many people don't have the time to look into this. Not to mention all the people who aren't good with technology (e.g. boomers).

Yeah, it's definitely in the rules, no doubt about that. As for naming any forum that doesn't require revealing your real IP.. isn't that most forums?? For a second there I thought I was crazy, but I was able to create a reddit account for a temporary email in tor in like 20 seconds. Reddit can just give the authorities the ip of the tor exit gate I used when creating an account, but that probably won't help them much. It's not the responsibility of the forums to make sure they can id anyone who uses them

Could always be this place is a honeypot

i suspect it only try to catch dealers or severly deranged ppl planning a mass shooting goodbye thread or something though

And did you not use a disposable email for this site? I did cuz i usually dont register to sites

My ridiculous username was based on the randomly generated email name

I didn't use a disposable email, but I used a private one that I created just for this website (what if I want to change my password or something?)
In any case, it's not my identity that I'm worried about - I took all the necessary precautions. I'm mostly worried about the other users who don't have the know-how to setup an anonymous account (or are too depressed / mentally ill to figure it out).
Also, what do you mean by 'honeypot'?

Something set up by the feds to catch ppl
Honestly, I don't really know anything about this, but it seems unlikely to me. This forum includes a ton of specific advice on ending your life. I'm sure that over the years many people were able to succeed thanks to this site. I doubt that feds would be willing to make that sacrifice just to find some perverts or sadists or whatever. Then again, I have no idea how they operate

I can't be sure whether most do it or not, but it's definitely not all that do. I already addressed this in a response to a different commenter. Still, even if all of them really did ban the use of proxies during registration, I would still expect a forum like this to be more mindful of user privacy than an average platform. Especially given how sensitive the topics discussed here are, and how vulnerable are the members.
This forum has already taken some good steps to ensure user privacy, but this is one point that is still bothering me personally
