"In the second case, a 33-year-old male with depression attempted to hang himself. The rope gave way and he fell down. He had also taken a paracetamol, and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug overdose. He did not lose consciousness but appeared withdrawn and depressed. Approximately 6 h later, his conscious state deteriorated. A CT scan revealed thrombosis of the left internal carotid artery, extending to the middle cerebral artery. The patient died. Both cases reinforce the need for full neurological assessment and review of any individual subject to blunt trauma to the neck, whether accidental or deliberate or where the history is incomplete. In the forensic setting, in particular, RTAs, suspension by the neck, strangulation, and garotting are all instances when examination and assessment must be thorough – and clear advice given – in the absence of any immediate signs or symptoms – that any new symptoms or signs require immediate and thorough neurological investigation. There should be low threshold for prolonged neurological observation or further neurovascular investigations such as ultrasound, CT or MRI scan or angiography, to minimize the risk of developing potentially fatal or incapacitating sequelae."

Many such cases lol

Imagine waking up and regretting it or worse, not regretting it, then getting retarded by a clot a day later.

The more I read about hanging the more risky it seems, might just train or jump. 😭

I was a firefighter (we have basic EMT training) and I have mentioned this about a hundred times on here. Same reason "erotic" strangulation is not and can never be safe in any capacity.

I've done it lol, and also been strangled. I have health issues from it now but I'm (allegedly) not cognitively impaired, yet.

The blood flow to your brain was restricted which means brain cells begin to die in seconds and this can lead to critical brain damage down the line. Thrombosis is also very typical as said in the OP.

Like any 'accident or injury*/practice or activity' that leaves the brain without oxygen, it has its risks. Neurons are the cells most sensitive to lack of oxygen. Such as autoerotic asphyxiation, breath control play in BDSM practices, choking games (viral internet challenges), etc.

*Head and neck injuries: the trauma can lead to artery dissection or bleeding that causes a clot.

• Embolic Stroke: A traveling clot forms elsewhere and is carried to the brain, causing a sudden brain blockage.

A blood clot can also be caused by underlying health conditions, or even by leading a sedentary life or prolonged immobility (being bedridden, having a job where you sit for several hours without moving your body..)

And on the subject of "hanging practices", making them a habit isn't a good idea. Besides being pointless, if you already understand how your body behaves and have experienced what it feels like to lose consciousness, there's no need to keep doing them.

Risks of practices that restrict cerebral blood flow and oxygenation:

Article:
• (page 71) There is a very real risk of cumulative brain damage if the AeA -autoerotic asphyxiation- practice is repeated often enough.

• (page 72) There are many documented additional dangers of strangulation. These include, but are not limited to, rupture of the windpipe, fracture of the larynx, damage to carotid arteries, dislodging atherosclerotic plaques in carotid arteries following by a stroke (ischemic insult), damage to the cervical spine, seizures, pulmonary edema, "thyroid storm," airway obstruction by the tongue, and aspiration of vomitus.

Repetitive hanging during autoerotic activity can increase risk for profound (stroke-related) cognitive deficit and impairments in perceptual and/or motor abilities, sensory, memory, and social behavior due to hypoxic injury to specific memory related structures of the brain.

Additionally, there are documented cases in which the recipient appeared to fully recover but was found dead several hours later.

• (page 73) Why did those delayed deaths happen? It was a result of the "no-reflow" phenomenon!

Brain ischemia causes some degree of edema, which closes the microcirculation due to the pressure on the capillary wall from outside. In the reperfusion phase, the larger branches are perfused again, but the microcirculation remains closed due to the persistent edema. It aggravates ischemic brain injury.

Vagal-outflow-induced cardiac arrest: Bilateral pressure upon the carotid sinus (for example, by a noose) may result in immediate unconsciousness.

• (page 75) There is an extremely high risk of dying sooner or later due to failing selfrescue mechanisms or sudden unconsciousness followed by self-strangulation/suffocation.

• (page 79) The primary, almost exclusive danger in autoerotic breath control play is to lose consciousness and suffocate. It seems this danger can be reduced to a certain extent when a responsible partner is present.
It should be noted that the presence of a partner does nothing to limit most of other injuries (ischemic encephalopathy, rupture of the windpipe, fracture of the larynx, etc.).
Breath control play causes the cumulative death of the brain neural cells (cortical and hippocampal neurons). The variation in
blood pressure may also cause strokes and retinal damage!
"Breath control play" is NOT SAFE! It is clearly very risky behavior! And such autoerotic asphyxiation fatalities are usually considered to be involuntary manslaughter.

• (page 92 - 93) Playing choking games in any form causes the cumulative death of the brain neural cells (cortical and hippocampal neurons). The variation in blood pressure may also cause strokes and retinal damage.

Excerpt from the book: Autoerotic asphyxiation: forensic, medical, and social aspects by Sergey Sheleg and Edwin Ehrlich.

And regarding the Hanging method itself, there are several ways to prevent it from going wrong:

Yeah, martyrdom told me I should go to hospital after my ligature and partial attempts, but I was too lazy so instead I wrote an ADRT lmao. Advanced Decision to Refuse Treatment, in case of serious brain damage or whatever. But yeah apparently complications from any form of strangulation are very common.
