I would just explain your reasoning to them, and then if you're able to with sincerity say something nice to them/about them.

Yeah, there's no manual for this type of thing. I don't have any children or even step children, just a few siblings, maybe a friend or two. I would like to say something to them, somehow, but I'm in the same boat as you. 🤔🤷‍♂️
