I'm a single male in my 50s. The only relationships I've had were with women that asked me out and I wasn't really attracted to them. The ones I was interested in were not interested in me – I must be a creep. The only thing I had going for me was my job – I worked hard to build my career over many years training and I finally got my PhD. Now that has gone, I was sacked from my job for giving my number to someone and sending a joke to them. I admit it was inappropriate and they complained and I was sacked for gross misconduct. Soon after I was diagnosed with psychotic depression and realise that I was experiencing that for several years due to the extreme bullying I experienced at work. I am currently suspended from working and could get struck off. I will never work again in my field and never again at anything else. I live on my own but don't think I can afford the bills on unemployment benefits.

I've been thinking long and hard about ending it all for the last year or so and cannot take it anymore. I was thinking of hanging myself but I've read a few posts here where people are saying it hasn't worked for them – I had read before that if the carotid artery is compressed you pass out within about 10 seconds but others on this site have said that didn't happen. I'm also worried about the thrashing around as you die and worried that the rope will break and I'll be left with brain damage. The other method would be the suicide hood. Originally it used helium but now I hear nitrogen is good as well. What purity does helium/nitrogen have to be? I can find helium but the only nitrogen I can find is liquid nitrogen – would this work? I've also heard you need a regulator – has anyone got details about this?

Well, it is only a job. Yep, shit happens. What exactly do you do for a living? I understand the bullying reason. Have you considered doing something completely different, in a different place, far away from the bullies?

I'm a doctor so I see it as more of a career than a job and I loved doing it, but bullying is rife in the NHS. I don't know what else I could do, no one is going to employ me as a shelf stacker or something like that.

Yes, you are over qualified for most jobs, and I am too. Just don't tell them about your education.... that is an option.

Can you use your degree as a doctor and practice in a different country?

I gather you are from the UK. There are parts of the industry they give a shit, as long as you work. Just to keep you going for a while. Like Throwaway9787 says, can you relocate abroad?

I've been doing it for many years so it would leave a huge gap in my employment record.

I feel too old to relocate. I'd also be alone in a foreign country. At least here I have my mother who, although unwell, is the only thing I've got left in my life now.

There is always the long term illness excuse, or family issues looking after someone. Like I said, some sectors of the industry don't check. They want results and performance.

I've been temporarily suspended from working so I don't think I could get another job in a different country, certainly not Europe as the suspension also applies to those countries. All I can do is wait for a final hearing when I could be struck off.

Resign before it comes to this. You can take on any other employment outside the medical trade.

Used both of those excuses. I was caring for my disabled mother at the time of the incident and I had complained to my superiors about bullying but it was ignored, so I had psychotic depression at the time. None of this made any difference and I was sacked and suspended. I put a lot into my work, did well, and feel I've just been tossed to the sidelines for one mistake.

My rep asked if I could resign but my employer rejected it, they wanted to sack me. They treated me like scum. I wouldn't know what else to do outside of this profession. Sorry to be so negative but I cannot see any hope at the moment.

Well, I know all about that one mistake, it is always coming back. However, in your case it is not too bad as you (unlike me) do not have a criminal record. This may work in your favour.

I'm no Einstein either. It just takes patience and time, I'm sure you could do it if you really wanted it.

No, I don't have a criminal record as yet. I had to be interviewed by the police over this, never been in that position before but they didn't charge me. I had a solicitor with me who said it was not a criminal offence but that it could show up on my Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. If that's the case I would have virtully no chance of working in the field again and may have difficulties visiting other countries. Thi is a calm period for me until I have my final hearing, which could go really bad.
