Going to South America in July: Is it still possible to buy N there?

Hello.

I'm going to South America in July, so I was wondering if you could clarify some things for me coz I don't have access to the latest PP book.



1) Is it still possible to buy N from the local pet shops or whatever they are called?

2) What countries\cities should I visit?


3) Do they require you to have a prescription or something?

4) Do you think the "American presidents" could probably "persuade" them into selling it to me without a prescription?

5) Should I get a testing kit?

6) How much does it cost nowadays?

7) If I decide not to use it right there, how should I safely transport it back to my country? Any tips?

I can't answer many of your questions, sorry.

What I do know is that a poster:

tried a few (several?) published vet shops in Peru fairly recently but had no luck.
If I remember correctly, he was very clear that he did NOT go to every Peruvian locale featured in the PP.

I've read that Ecuador, Columbia and/or Argentina MAY have it available but unfortunately information is scant, less than credible and not backed up. Wherever you do decide to try, it seems like rural might be a better shot than urban, but I'm supposing.

In addition, there's a very recent post claiming it could be bought in Juarez, Mexico as of 1 year ago. (It's a rough city).

7) If I decide not to use it right there, how should I safely transport it back to my country? Any tips?

Even with your "American Presidents" quote in a preceding question, you really should confirm your country (+ probable/options for mode(s) of travel) with a question like this. More specificity will bring a higher chance of it being answered.

Damn..this is so disappointing;(( I was saving money specifically for this trip and I had high hopes it would all work out.....

About rural shops... Are they supposed to have it? I mean, I don't think the demand is as high as in cities, so they probably don't even sell it. I might be mistaken though.

I live in Russia, so I'll be going there by plane. If I manage to get N in SA, I should probably use it there...somewhere by the ocean, away from local tourist places ;) Much safer than trying to sneak it on a plane.

Whether you can transport N back is dependent on the laws in your country. You will need to examine your laws to find out if N is illegal and the legal implications of being in possession of it.

You may have a point on the rural vs urban issue. If one travels so far for this purpose, I'd imagine you'd want to try as many as possible in each setting.

Generally speaking, on international flights any liquid containers over 100ml are probably examined/thrown out, etc.

even if you do get it, carrying it back will be the real issue, you will be heavily scrutinized when leaving most latin american countries because of the drug trafficking problem, and getting caught with an ilegal substance in an airport is a terrifying experience, they treat you like shit and you could even loose the right to travel by plane if the authorities of your country get involved. so in the off chance that you get it, i would recommend booking a hotel and doing it there, too much risk to take out of the country and this may be your only chance.

there is also little chance that they will sell it to you anyway, when a gringo comes asking for prescription drugs they know that it isn't going to be used for the intended purposes, specially if we are talking about a veterinary drug used only as anesthetic and euthanasia. but if you are lucky then your presidents may come in handy, money really talks in latin america.

but even if you are not lucky you can still get something out of this trip, metoclopramide and many other drugs that will normally be prescription only in your country are over the counter here, they sell them with no questions asked and they can be easily carried out of the country, you just tell them that it's medicine for traveling sickness that some pharmacy gave to you.

Well it ain't the worst possible outcome. In Russia, pentobarbital has the same level of "illegality" as cocaine, so we might be talking about 10-15 years of jail time if he's discovered at home any time before he finally uses it.

Seems like the best way to increase your odds would be:

- substantial "presidents" (probably minimum $1,000 USD) for purchase price
- brush up on Spanish and/or hire a trusted translator
- hit MANY places across regions and multiple countries

Hi, someone from south america here.
First, every country has a different legislation and culture. So you would need to narrow down which countries you're gonna go looking N in. Most people go to Mexico from what I know of, and it's the easiest to get around.

Now, I'm not sure about Argentina or Colombia. The first does have a law system that generally works and I lived there and tried to get some but no avail. Colombia is hard to tell. I feel it'd be easier to buy coke there than N. But there may be some dealers as long as you have enough money. Now the issue with traveling back without being detained...yeah. Countries like Colombia, Peru and/or Chile and Ecuador have very strict security because of drug trafficking. I'd be very suspicious unless you have a realistic backup story. Or you take it there...

Any tips on safety (avoiding getting scammed, robbed etc) when taking this road?

About the Spanish language .. Do you think I could still communicate in English with most vet shop sellers who operate in big cities? How should I proceed with finding a trusted translator?
