Forcing meaning upon inherent meaninglessness is just a distraction from the inevitable, which is eternal death and peace, only in death is there true peace.

If they didn't force meaning, it would be a lot harder to keep servile wage slaves that pour tax dollars into government coffers and keep rich corporations running.

Makes you wonder why so many people do it. Well, to frame it another way, humans are designed to find patterns in the noise.

Yes, the idea that there is any meaning, is just a delusion. I see us humans as just being here because of evolution, our lives essentially are meaningless. All we are doing is waiting around for death anyway. All the suffering we go through is for the sake of it. I think it is just a coping mechanism for many people, forcing some sort of meaning as it would drive many people insane if they thought about how meaningless everything is. Death is the only way to find true peace for me, life is just a constant struggle.

Perhaps life is inherently meaningless but maybe we should focus on living day to day with enjoyment instead of trying to find meaning.

I saw a tweet about it, back in past for majority of our ancestors, life was meant to be enjoyed on a day to day basis but capitalism corrupted that with turning us into wage slaves and obsession with "success"

I really like this idea. But how do people who're in chronic pain (physical, emotional), who can't afford life without working themselves into sickness and injury, do this? I bet some people can focus on living day to day with enjoyment. It's great that they can. But a lot of people are just in far too much pain--and "professional help" doesn't necessarily help them at all.

I'm not even joking :sunglasses:

I remember reading that by the time colonists made it to Hawaii, native Hawaiians were only working for a few hours in the morning doing the important things they needed to survive then the rest of the day was just playing, relaxing, and eating

Hope I don't come across like I'm trying to argue. Therapists often tell suicidal people to find meaning. Find something that works for us. Seems to me a lot of the things that work for many people, they can't access. Like if intimacy works for you, you have to be lucky enough to be someone others want to be intimate with. Or if peace and quiet work for you, you need enough money to afford a large plot of land isolated enough from loud neighbors...

Yeah, you've pretty described the barrier to that. Our society doesn't enable us to enjoy just living because we /have/ to be wage slaves under the threat of homelessness and starvation. All so the elites can buy their 10th mansion.

Emotional pain I think is mainly do to how alienated our societal structures have made humans. We see each other as competitors not as a fellow person to form meaningful connection.

The chronic pain one is interesting. Chronic pain issues would be greatly alleviated if people didn't worry about the basics of survival.

Professional help can only teach resiliency, it doesn't alleviate homelessness or starvation. Even psychiatrists and therapists I've seen online are admitting they know there's limited help they can provide when people's main issue is poverty.

Couldn't agree more. And, yes, I've been in many online comment sections in which professional mental health workers admit that for A LOT of people, what's needed isn't counseling or pharmaceuticals, but legal protections, rights, housing... poverty alleviation. But those interventions don't get passed because, like you said, they're contrary to the desires of the wealthy and powerful (see how California, US state with biggest homelessness problem, recently voted DOWN yet another housing policy proposal designed to make it easier to build more housing for the poor and homeless).

There's this term I learned in one of my classes in college called necropolis, the idea that the state will give you just enough so you won't die immediately while keeping you inhumane conditions that makes life miserable. It was in the context of refugee camps in Europe but I honestly think it could apply to 90%+ of the world's population

Yeah, the state treats us plebes like cattle owned by a rancher. Keep the herd alive because that's how you earn your money, but otherwise, the living, breathing, feeling animals are just livestock. And I agree with you about the 90%+ of the world's population. I'm working with a team looking at poverty and government corruption globally. The wealth inequality problem is universal--from Asia to Europe to the Americas to Australia... And WI begets government corruption as the wealthy take control of the government to pass and enforce the laws that benefit them at our expense.

There are already so many excellent, free, high-quality publications on this--about how the US Supreme Court over the past 50 years has abandoned the protection of the poor, how US policies are statistically aligned with what the corporate class wants, how the proportion of full-time employed among the US homeless continues to grow... We're just livestock, man.
