I am wondering about erasing data on laptop computer and smartphone before CTB because there is a risk of not pulling the trigger or surviving. If I knew I will CTB successfully, I would format my laptop's hard drive and erase all the data on smartphone but I can't know that. I would hate if I erased all the data and survived CTB attempt.

I wonder if anyone actually erases all the data from both devices or they leave them as they are. I am worried about personal and sensitive information becoming available to anyone depending on what happens to devices. They might get thrown out by family members or given away or donated.

I could ask to erase all data in my last will notice but I have nobody who knows how to operate devices.

Unless you have important things on your laptop that would constitute a risk to your family if they were stolen (identity theft, bank account disclosures) then yeah you should reformat. If you have a shady internet history or don't want people to trace your steps to CTB, then that would be a reason to reformat. I don't have anything to hide really and it's not a big deal for me if I chose to erase things or not.

I actually plan to unlock my desktop, laptop and tablet so my family can access them. I'll delete Tor, clear my browser history and of course scrap the porn, but I keep my most sensitive info on a heavily encrypted USB stick. I'll toss that in the trash before I reach my bus stop; my phone too, so I can't make a last minute rescue call. But I have lots of info on my hard drives that I want my family to have. I just need to get rid of everything that links me to this site or the Darknet. There's no point in making life harder for people who already live on the edge.

You could certainly try to encrypt your laptop and smartphone so that all your data is behind a password or alternatively you could upload all the data you want to keep safe to some kind of a could storage service, and then delete the originals afterwards on the day (or the days leading to it) you feel ready to go. There are ones you can get where your data gets automatically deleted if you don't renew your service for the next month (however, Google Drive, for example, doesn't automatically delete your files, so check each provider's policy beforehand). Even a terabyte or more is easily available if you have a digital movie/music collection, for example.

Alternatively if you have a relatively small amount of data that is sensitive and you wish to keep safe (like just some photos and text documents), you could just pack it all into an encrypted archive on your hard drive using 7-Zip for example. :) And choosing a password you can remember!

Honestly, it's the least of my concerns. Fuck it all, I'll be dead by then. And if I'm not? Well, at least I can continue planning my next attempt and my games will still be installed.

The stuff I browse on the internet is so random I'm just going to leave it so anyone who goes snooping through will be scratching their heads thinking wtf?

I've been using my smartphone on this site. When it's time, I'll simply re-boot and reset, erasing everything.
