I have heard a lot of stories that their cats make someone want to live again and I've heard that they can made them more suicidal too? So does that depend?

Pets can definitely give people a reason to live. However, I would not get one solely for the purpose of making you less suicidal because if it doesn't work and you end up killing yourself anyway, then that pet will be abandoned.

That's true I need to think more thoroughly about this, thank you for your advice

this is why i only took care of neighborhood strays 😓 even then i felt so bad when i didnt leave a cat food for a month because that entire month i could hardly get out of bed. thankfully i knew another neighbor was feeding her though.

Pets are commitments and commitments that you really need to care about, like another animal such as a cat or dog can be really good for recovery purposes because it gets you into a routine related to caring for them, but like most people in this thread have said already it's really something you need to think about like all commitments. And they're right in that, if you do end up leaving the world, there's no one to take care of your pet - which is like. A really big problem unless you have plans to get someone you know to take care of the pet in question after your passing or something else.
So it can both be a pressure and something good! It's something to very much think on.

You're so kind to think about them even when you're struggling!
I've played with stray once and it accidentally scratched me and I had to get rabies shot 🤣

I think about this a lot too. I couldn't bear to lose them or think about me leaving them and they would think I've left them. I hope my situation would get better and I would have the privilege to have them in my life tho. Thank you for your reply

Cats especially old ones are very sensitive to negative energy. They *will* stop you from dying, in fact one stopped me (by sitting on my lap for 2 days straight, it was a random stray that just walked up to me)

I have four cats, and I love them dearly. They definitely give me more of a purpose in life. However I do still experience frequent ideation haha.

Hey, I have a cat and me being scared nobody will take care of him after I'm gone really helped me but does not fix the problem and I may have to leave him one day.

There's a pet store near me that sells all sorts of exotic pets. I wanted to get either a sugar glider or a chinchilla.

That being said, I don't know if I want to do live animals right now 😅

I am building up an orchid collection. That should do for the time being.😤

It does. I've had one for a few years, and it definitely helped curb my suicidal tendencies. However, don't get one if you can't properly care for its needs, or it may end up making your life more burdensome.

My pets are my whole existence ... 🖤🖤🖤🖤

I think you guys know about everyone but Cooper. I dunno if I have introduced him to you guys. My pets had an integral part in turning my mental health around. They literally saved me. I don't know where I would be without them. 🖤

100000% worked for me (a SEVERE case) be careful with it though, if you lose access to the pet it can make things WORSE

now that I no longer have my cat... I no longer have reason to live. I had to move for financial reasons and my roommate didn't allow me to bring him, and I have struggled a lot more with SI since then.

I was still struggling mentally when I had a cat. it doesn't fix your mental state. but it does give you an adorable reason to live, and a sense of purrrrpose 😊
when you are having a hard moment, they just know. you are crying they will come lay in your lap and comfort you and lick your tears. I would definitely try it, what do you have to lose <3

Someone just posted about how their own sibling killed their cat.

I don't like getting too attached to them because of their short lifespans and it can be devastating if they pass away. They're pretty fragile too. I mean, they can go for any reason. So in that sense, it could make things worse as well.

i love my cat!! pets can be very comforting when you're having a hard time, but i have never been having a suicidal meltdown and been like "but my cat!!". maybe because she's a family pet and i know she will be taken care of? i guess it depends on your situation.

Not a cat but I got a dog half a year ago and I must say the thought of leaving him alone made me quite guilty. I still knew that I'd do it eventually but he was another thing to think about.
